A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in opposite direction).

The question is:

Will the plane take off or not?

Yes, it would.

This has been discussed here at least twice.

I have heard it sends people mad.

are you for real?..... you need air flow to generate lift under the wings, what's the stall speed?!!!!

You would have thrust but no lift, as mentioned you would have no airflow/lift over the wings.

You could argue you have a ground speed, but you would have no lift.

If you had a 150kt headwind though it may well take off

Unless , of course you had a VTOL Capability like the Harrier, in which case it would take off

Is this an 'ironic' repost or a genuine one

This was a huge thread before - with links to a 300 page thread on another forum....

some of us are new to PH and quite happy to make fools of ourselves in front of you veterans (some bigger fools than others, looking at this thread)

Relative to anything but the conveyor belt (and including the air around it), the plane is static. You would walk straight up to it and get in while it's at take-off speed.

No movement of air, no lift, no takeoff. The pilot can do all he wants to the wings and flight controls - the plane will just stay where it is.

Actually, you probably couldn't. Wouldn't you get sucked into the engines/blown away form behind if they were at full speed?
