Hi,

In previous seasons, I’ve competed in a road class (Scottish A4). This season, I’ve entered in a modified class (Scottish B4). It’s only just occurred to me that the scruteneers will ask me for a MSA log book – which I don’t have ... and I'm competing this weekend ... what a tit!

I’m currently leafing through the blue book to see if there’s any guidance but thought someone here will surely know straight off.

It looks like the scruteneers will be able to provide / generate a log book on the day. Is that so?

I'll try and contact the organising club to make prior arrangement - assuming it's possible. Seems like I'll have to provide ...

1) A photo of the side elevation of the car.
2) A photo of the front 3/4 showing the reg plate.
2) Sight of the original V5 and a copy.
3) £25

Anything else I'll need to have with me?

BTW – the car’s on a SORN at the moment and won’t need an MOT ‘til May.

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Eric

I got my log book in 1999, so my advice maybe a little outdated. If you are running in modified (slicks, no lights, no interior apart from the drivers seat, fibreglass panels allowed, no tax / insurance / MOT etc etc) I can't see why you would be asked for sight of the V5 or for pictures showing the registration number. I certainly wasn't. Perhaps your 'modified' is not the same as mine. Indeed I have no V5 for my Davrian and only know the reg.no. because I have a photocopied article showing the car from 1980 when it was competing in tarmac stage rallies (can tell its the same car as it has the Mk8 bodywork on the rear despite being a Mk7a and one of the light clusters is set a bit 'wonky') ....

I got mine about a week before the event, by ringing up an appropriate scruitneer who came over to look at the car in the garage one evening a couple of days later. I'm not sure if the contact details for scrutineers are in the Blue Book any more, as a licenced CoC I have a red book so have all that stuff, but you could probably find someone in your club who can help you out with some names if your club promotes its own speed events.

Before practice scrutineers are VERY, VERY busy. While they might do you a log book on the day (I have no experience of this, I've never heard of it being done but that doesn't mean it is impossible), unless the event entry is low or they have plenty of people I don't know that they would have time to do it before practice starts. I would assume this means you cannot practice until it is done so you would need to talk nicely to the CoC to run out of order. Your SRs should have the name of the chief scrutineer, it would be worth calling them and talking to them before the event so they know to bring the right forms.

Thanks for the reply.

I've been in contact with the chairman of the host club and he confirms it'll be ok on the day.

I've also sent a note to their comp sec advising him in case the scrute's need a heads-up.

Regarding the documentation, you may well be correct - I'll let you know next Monday how it went. I was basing my assumptions on a brief web trawl (including the MSA site).

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Eric

Got sorted - no problem.

Spoke to the chief scrute on the Saturday morning and he said he'd sort it out during the day.

He'd already checked the car over so all it took was filling out the appropriate form with such details as ...

  • Make, model, engine type / size etc.
  • My name and address.
  • Year, registration and chassis number.
  • Roll bar type (as per 'Q' pics in the blue book).
  • Fuel tank type, location, material and size.
  • The fact that I don't have an extinguisher.
  • The types of events the car would be entered for.

He didn't need to see the V5 but it was useful for the chassis number.

It did need a photo which he took.

MSA cost is £27 and we agreed on £30 to cover him for the photo and postage.

I've got a recipt which will cover me for 30 days and I'll get the book through the post from the MSA in due course.

Very pleasant and helpful fella.

Cheers,

Eric
