Ive got a 2000 V70 which has done 130k.Up to about 80-90k I always used Volvo dealerships, but noticed the costs were becoming steeper.I figured as the car was losing value,I didnt need to Volvo service it any more,so I shopped around.Tried one local guy who said he could do it,but would have to take the car to Volvo to get the service-interval reset, and they charged him/me £50 as Volvo told him it was a diagnostic/software issue.
Anyway I have used a different garage for the last couple of years and just had my service done this morning. On leaving,I noticed they hadnt reset the interval light.Went in and the guy held down the trip-reset button for 20-30 seconds and the service-interval light went off......
Volvo charge £50 for that !!!!...and they wonder why we get the local garage to do it instead ?

My 2004 V70 D5's last service (24K) cost £387, which I thought was v. expensive consdiering it had nothing extra done and was just a gloryfied oil change. Is this a typical price?

Ive owned a number of "premium" brands (whatever that means) and Volvo are by miles the most expensive of the lot....I even had to take them to Volvo UK to get something done under warranty, which they were trying to charge me for.
Quick example....80k service from Volvo £430...90k service independant garage £115.....
basically it needs serviced every 10k so any "loss" in px from not having FVSH is offset
Actually I just px'd this week against a new Audi A6 and it didnt make a blind bit of difference to them that the last 5-6 services werent done by Volvo.

My 24k service cost 450, but that included new front pads.
My 36k service cost the same, but without the pads. I don't think the D5 is much different to T5 with regards to costs.

I was always told that the 36k service was the big one. However, another local-ish dealer charged less nearly the same basic price for both 24k and 36k services.

It is expensive. The other thing to weigh up is the contributory warranty scheme. After the main warranty expires, if your transmission falls out for example, and you've still had the car serviced by a main dealer, Volvo will contribute towards the cost of the repairs.
Depends I guess how much you save independent vs dealer servicing whether it's worth it I suppose.

The number of times my car was in the garage for warranty work in the last two years of it's warranty, it might be worth it. But apparently the scheme is void if you do any mods, and I'd dearly love a RICA upgrade...

Unlike the Dutch Rica product, The Swedish written MTE software that I distribute in the UK is put into your car's ECU without opening it.

There are therefore no visible signs of the ECU having been opened or the chip removed and resoldered.

So,correct me if Im wrong,as BMW spun me the same story with my X5 service interval lights.Unless there is a fault code, there shouldnt be any reason why my local, independant(and superb)garage should not be able to fully service my car and re-set the interval lights...the guy certainly had a very large book which he referred to for the V70
Just making sure before Audi spin me the same story when I pick up the A6 this week ??

OK this is what happened. Went to a "local" garage had work carried out no probs, drove car away then next time I started it service light on. Back again big book out they followed instructions (as above V70) light stays on. Eventually I get pissed off with it, go to Volvo garage say look guys bla, bla car done xyz miles light on can you help, they plug into OBD connector do the job properly (I get cheeky and ask mech about his interrogater so he goes through the LOT (4 titles) checks the lot out clears service doda etc) and they say glad to be of service Mr MoJo see you next time and that's it all for £0.

SOOOOOO it would seem that the only way to be "sure" is to use the proper interrogater via OBD and that clears the service warning.

Maybe??

MoJo.

Mr Norchi,

You are totally incorrect. The RICA software is installed via the OBDII port. Have a look on our web site www.volvotuninguk.com and click on the engine tuning section. You can see which upgrades are installed via OBDII.

Why you persist in mis-informing people about our products on this forum and on others, is quite frankly beyond me!

Adam.

There is often interesting elaboration of this issue on the VOC site www.volvoclub.org.uk

Currently in the performance section under 'rica or BSR' and various other threads in that area.

I've read that entire thread (trying to stay awake while doing so) and nope, I still don't get what you're babbling on about on here!!! lol

Mr Norchi, like I said before, if you are at all confused about any of our products, all you have to do is look on our web site www.volvotuninguk.com and there you will see all the information. If you want to know which RICA software is installed via the OBDII port, simply click on the engine tuning section. The last column specifies which cars are upgraded via OBDII and which cars are not.

More to the point, who cares anyway? This thread is about a totally different topic - SERVICE COSTS!!!

If you are still struggling with all of this, do let me know so that I can go through it with you very slowly.

Adam.

Just had a 100k service on my P reg V70 T5. Took it to an indie Volvo specialist (all ex Volvo staff and have the diagnostic kit apparently) in Southport and was most relieved to only get hit with £177.

Great service, good advice and they didn't just replace stuff willy nilly but discussed it with you and suggested "that'll need doing in xk miles but not just yet" and "that oil leak isn't too bad, we've cleaned it off - see how it goes. They all do that to some extent and it's a bigish job"

They'll be getting the rest of my business, they had the right attitude.

Had our '01 V70 2.4T serviced recently at a local garage recommended via PH.

5th annual service + a set of plugs = £171
Cambelt change = £133

Quite happy at those prices and, yes, the service indicator was re-set OK (presumably via the trip switch)

As mentioned depends on the car as to whether holding down the trip button works or not, all the newer stuff is done via software upgrades.

I have no problem with taking cars to independents, however the newer cars in this example the S40's/V50's get software upgrades when you take them in for routine servicing, theres no mention or charge as such they are just done. Also they check for any recalls that have been issued and anything that might need replacing, something an independant cant do as they dont have the computers. Dont blame the dealers for the costs as Volvo are the ones who charge 30k for the computers, if it was less then the dealers would charge less, same story with the parts. Most indepenents do use the proper parts others dont.

On older cars take them to independents, on newer stuff take it to the dealers.
