Getting fed up with all the little scratches and bumps on my 928 S4 and thinking of a full respray, possibly also changing colour. Any ideas of cost of a good quality job. Im based in Surrey.

Thanks

on a 928 I would want between £1000 and £2500 for the job depending whether the car was dropped off ready to spray, eg, all glass out, stripped down and flatted ready for final prep work, or dropped off as a complete car.

Try giving Premier Panel Skills a call. They are based in Aldershot and did a good job on my 993 C2. ( 01252 313888 )There are always a few battered Porsches outside waiting for treatment!

Wild Oliver, sounds pretty good value if I understand correctly if I delievered the car intact you could strip , prepare and respray for £2,500 (and presumably put it back together!). Any problems if I was looking to change the colour, its currently a rather fetching purple !!

If you want perfection, give I&M Autobody Repairs in Ropley (near Alton) a call. The proprietor Ian really knows his stuff and he has an excellent reputation for classics. He does a lot of Porsches as well. Wouldn't like to guess on a quote, he's not cheap, but then a top job never is.

An oft repeated story, apologies if you've heard it before but it might cheer you up!
I had a 928S, left it standing for a few years and the paintwork really suffered. I took it into a very professional shop, they said the colour was hard to match, it would cost 4 grand to do the job properly, the full respray, laqueur and bake, I agreed. Picked her up a week later looking stunning.
I drove to a friends house to show him then went home. As I pulled into my driveway I realised I didn't have my front door keys on me. I jumped out, went to the door and started rooting through my pockets looking for my keys. Then I hear a huge crunch. I'd left the hand brake off, the car had rolled around the corner, down the drive and crashed into the side of the house. Wing, light cluster, bonnet, rim, bumper, wrecked.
I went back to the paintshop the next day, I said "Have you any paint left?" He said "Yeah why? Did we miss a bit?" I said "Perhaps you'd better take a look". His face was an absolute picture. Cost me another two and a half grand for the paint plus repairs.
I loved that car but it was such a money pit.

If you want to change colour it will cost more, as previously mentioned as it is engine out, interior out, boot stripped out, doors stripped etc to do the job right.

Give me a call with pleasure if you want 07725 217587 always happy to offer advice even if we cant get the business due to distance.

Thanks for the offer Wildoliver, great thing about PH is the way people are so willing to help, its much appreciated.

I just rang up one of my more local body shops that has been recommended on here a couple of times. I asked for a quote and the guy says sure bring it down and I'll have a look. Well as its 20 miles away from home and I struggle for time as I work in town (London)I want to make sure we are not wasting each others time so I asked for a ball park which he just refused to give. Why would that be? 928's are pretty standard, I cant hold him to the price and without a ball park I won't go see him so I don't understand his approach, very irritating tho. or am I missing the point ?

possibly concerned about imperfections in the bodywork, which you might think as nothing but could need work to sort for a quality job?

To be totally honest I wouldn't quote to someone local either in his position.

But we approach paintowrk in a different way to most bodyshops.

I had one lovely chap off here email me a few times last night, and to be honest advised him not to use us as we weren't the right kind of shop for the work he requires, we tend to limit ourselves to 2 areas. 1: Full restorations / resprays. and 2: Bumper and small localised repairs.

The reason for this is to avoid blending in to surrounding panels, which can be notoriously hard on a lot of new cars due to the waterbased paints used, it can end up to paint a bonnet and not notice the colour match blending through the front wings in to the doors, and before you know it you have painted half a car, yet due to the customer only wanting the bonnett painting you have to charge the going rate for a panel.

Tricky business.

I will always quote roughly to people a long way away, as I have no wish for someone to drive 200 miles and have their time wasted, but if your ten mins away I would rather quote accurately looking at the car, think how you would feel if quoted £2500 over the phone then when he saw the car it became £5k you would feel cheated.

One thing I'm aware of: Prices are cheaper up north!

Someone I know found it cheaper to transport his TR4 up Yorks/Lancs way (can't remember where exactly) and have a strip + repair small bit of rust + respray the same price as just a respray in the London area. They did a cracking job on it too.

Ok, I've got a couple of quotes from recommended shops (up to £5 1/2k for a colour change)question now is what color should I go for ? Currently have an Amethyst metallic 1991 S4 with a purple (yes really) interior which Im not planning to change. I thought silver, grey or black maybe but am open to suggestions.

Tbh you will struggle to find colours to go with the purple.

Only silver, lilac met, or purple would go imho.
