Interesting write up about these awesome weapons, 600 rounds per minute, that's ten bullets a second... think about it....

However, like catapults, tanks, atom bombs etc, they are not going to be uninvented so what's the answer...

Watched Lord of War on DVD last night - good, thought-provoking film "based on actual events", but with a little bit of artistic licence I guess...
Anyway, it detailed the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, and the phenominal number of AK47s that found their way onto the black market following Ukraine's independance from the Soviet Union. Most ended up in Africa.
Ethan Hawke, playing an interpol arms trade investigator/enforcer had a good line: "I'm not worried about missing nukes, they end up in a silo and never get fired - I'm worried about your AKs, they're the real weapons of mass destruction".
Very good trailer at the start with some "home shopping channel" type gun sale as well.

That's nothing, the German MG 42 of WW2 will spit out 1,200 rounds per minute (cyclic)
And my old Bren would fire around 550 rpm (from a 28 round box mag!)
Can't make accessories out of it though.

Minigun does 10,000rpm

The genius behind the AK is its simplicity...
Its simple, bulky internals with huge gaps - but that means it fires everytime, unlike the M-16 or SA-80 which completley stop functioning if a single grain of sand gets into the mechanism..
However, its completley inaccurate, and relies on the high fire rate and spread to take care of the target...

Thankfully, Autonotiv, you can't buy a live firing AK 47 legally in England. Even in the US you'd have to jump through hoops and pay a fortune for a full-auto AK. They regard semi-auto AKs as ordinary rifles, these are a few hundred $s and, with some restrictions on imported parts content, can be owned by anyone in most states.
You could buy a deactivated rifle, if you're over 18, without any restrictions. These are about £300.
Only if you're a truly abysmal marksman ! A MAK-90 fired single shot will give 5" groups at 100 yards.
When firing fully auto barrel heating will rapidly throw off accuracy. Ferocious climb and considerable recoil won't help either.

Didn't Jeremy Clarkson stand in front of a Merc Sprinter van and demonstrate how inaccurate the AK47 was - although firing directly at the van, not one bullet actually touched it.

OK, so you may have to reload it a few times to get that rate......

Unlikely there are any left in serviceable condition. AK-47 is the original, there have been several other variants since then including a change from 7.62 x 39 to 5.45 x 39.5 as used on the AK-74.
It is the peasants' weapon, but inaccurate over longer ranges when compared to the M16 and SA80.
I was talking with a guy from 'a certain armaments manufacturer' who was telling me about the ship-borne anti-missile system they sell.
It's like a minigun on steroids. The radar system detects an incoming missile, plots speed and trajectory versus the movement of the ship, wind speed etc. Then the pod opens, the gun pops up on high-speed hydraulics and starts spraying (IIRC) thousands of titanium (or was it tungsten) rounds into the path of the missile so that when the missile gets there, it gets shredded.
Slight drawback is that the system has to operate without warning, so if a hapless seaman happens to be in the way when the pod opens...
