Now can this be done. I have been looking in the classifieds on here and see there are a few around the £15,000 mark. Am i going to get a good car for this or do i need to spend more. Other options include the Honda S2000 and Elise. It is going to be a weekend toy used on sunny days. Have a company car for normal use.

Cheers

Sure it can be done.
If you can, squeeze into a later 2.7 car - they are better than the earlier 2.5's
My main bit of advice when going for an older Boxster is get it checked properly by an expert.

You're looking at some older cars, then.

2.7s of reasonable age seem to be obtainable....but not the S model.

If I were you I would look at spending 20K. For this you will get a four or five year old car, top specification, fsh, and around 30,000 miles.

Key reasons you want a younger car with low miles (don't shout Henry!) is that you can obtain an official Porsche warranty on a car with up to 100,000miles and/or ten years old. It costs around £750 a year and insures you against the big, unpredictable bills. This peace of mind is well worth it given the extraordinary coats of, say, replacing a gearbox or engine.

I reckon you are looking at 2-3K a year depreciation on such a car if you keep it for three years.

Servicing should be OK. Between £300 and £600 (ish) a year and you'll probably spend a grand on a full pads and discs change in that time.

If all that sounds like too much money buy an S2000. Its a brilliant car. Yes the Porsche is better - but you pay for it. Having said that the 986 Boxster S is looking like a preformance bargain at the moment...

Having just sold my second S2000 after 4 years of ownership, I would concur with that assessement of it!

I would, however, take issue with the claim that the 2.7 is better. I don't think it is - I test drove a couple before buying the first S2000 and was pretty underwhelmed by it. (No arguments about the 3.2 S though!)

Short answer is yes, a very good Boxster can be had for that money. I don't personally think there is much in the 2.7 / 2.5 thing, it's very much personal choice. The 2.7 in your price range is a bit quicker and a little quieter but thats about it.Given likely use you won't really miss the extra power. I would advice you to buy on condition and to get the car inspected for peace of mind. Personally I'd choose a excellent condition 2.5 over a poor condition 2.7 every time.
The posts on depreciation and service costs are not far off I reckon.

If you're after a weekend car for fun for about 15k I'd sugest you'd be better off with the elise. I had a standard S2 elise before I got my '03 Boxster S. The Elise is a much more fun car to drive than the Boxster. Boxster is brilliant, but heavier and a bit portly! Elise is just a big go kart! Get a Boxster if you need to drive every day and you'll love it, it cossets you and makes you feel like a good driver. Get an Elise if you really love the art of driving and you don't need to use it evey day, It'll rattle your senses!

Can it be done for £15K?

Of course it can. I got mine for £11.5K and it's been used everyday with no problems.

Buy the cheapest you can - I't will probably have less depreciating to do.

There is a 3.2 'S' in Porsche Post this month: 2000 model, Iris Blue (special order), metropole blue interior and hood, 18" turbo wheels, wind deflector, full OPC history, tracker, armourfend, MOT until June 2007, 70k miles, one lady owner. It's up for £15,950 so if you can get it down to £15k you could spend the balance on an OPC inspection and a warranty. Might be over £15k overall, but not by much and you get a full OPC warranty on the car for first 12 months and this can be extended up to cars 9th birthday or 100,000 miles. Only detail missing is if it is a manual or tit-tronic.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll get owners contact details to you, based in Milton Keynes. I have no connection with seller at all, just thought this may interest you.

Give the Priviledge website a try.
I'm paying £515 a year. Again you have to haave a tracker fitted, but they were the best I found. If you limit the mileage to say 6k (should be fine for a weekend car) you'll probably find it cheaer still.

Bob,

That was a 6k limit on the mileage. It was only an to get an idea of prices. The Boxster looks allot more favourable now than it first did. Looking at the finances the £15k budget is going to be the steep side of what i can get my hands on, anyway if the house sells and we move it will totally put on the back burner and the Westie it will be. There seem to be some nice Boxsters around for £11-12K.

My advice avoid franchise dealer. I bought a first ever car for my wife I now know I paid at least £7,000 too much for a vehicle that has had three oil leaks, new wheel bearing, new clutch, computer stalk, is due for new track rod ends and rear suspension work. Hood sensor now failing, all in 11 months, and to cap it all turns out to be a C32. I could have got a vehicle of this quality from anywhere and paid a lot less for it.
