Race numbers on the road?
Discussion
Aren't they still illegal? I thought they were considered by the Police to promote street racing and either had to be removed, or crossed out for road use?
I only ask because there are loads of those green and yellow mini things whizzing around my area with them on!

They'll be estate agents of the variety Scummus Foxtonious...

There are two potential scenarios here:-
- Non race car with "racing" number
- Real race car, being used on the road.
I can't comment on the (il)legality of the first case(which is almost certainly the category all your "green and yellow mini things" fall into).
As for the second option - I believe the RACMSA (and probably others) don't like their members using race cars on the road with the numbers still intact, as they don't want any street-racing associations. (I can't quantify "don't like" - it might mean losing your racing license)

Let me get this straight, it's ok to drive around in some luminous green MAX'd out piece of crap (full body kit LED on wiper blades, bean can exhaust etc ), but its considered potential illegal to drive aroud in a classic sports car with a number on the side??? Which vehicle is most likley to promote road racing?
Really having trouble seeing the logic in this.....

Ah...Foxton's; that would explain why I keep seeing them in local property photos!
They certainly look like a racing colour scheme to me. I assumed it was some kind of Mini limited production affair - where, if you bought one, you'd be eligible for a cheap race series complete with matching luggage, free champers etc!
Who's going to inform the cops then?!

It's likely to attract attention from BiB but not against any laws I'm aware of. However, the terms of the competition license issued by the MSA specifically say that competition numbers must be removed or covered up on public roads, and the MSA can impose fines or revoke the competition license if anyone is reported for this. So you are unlikely to see genuine competitors with numbers on, but more likely to see a max power muppet who thinks it looks cool.
I've got a copy of an Autocar article on this very subject somewhere.
There is nothing in the RTA to state that you can't have numbers on your car - so its not illegal.
However MSA guidelines state that competition numbers should be covered up unless you are actually competing (e.g. road section betwen stages on a rally).

I have white squares permiently attached to the side of my road legal Hill climb/Sprint car but remove the numbers on the road, but what about timming strut? Mine is bolted on to the front and although not imposible, to remove it after each meeting wolud prove to be a considerable pain in the nether regions.
At least half of these should be off the road once the property market crashes . . . Sorry to any PH Estate Agents - nothing personal - just no respect for that lot.
"Yes - it's a house - that's £800K please"

Have any of you lot wondered why they've painted a Mini in Lotus colours???
eric mc said: MSA advice - remove or cross through competition numbers before venturing onto the public highway. Leaving white squares or roundels in place is not a problem.
That's what I thought until I got a boll%cking from a steward while leaving Lydden last year with my numbers crossed out.
Coincidentally, I'm one of those blokes mentioned above who bought a Mini with a race series all thrown in (John Cooper Challenge)- and I'm an estate agent (but not with Foxtons!)
