In condensed form you will need:

a 3 door golf of your choice

A Synchro Golf of your choice

Transplant transmission tunnel, boot floor, drivetrain, fuel tank from syncro into 2 door shell (lots of welding and some fabrication.

Also the standard Synchro drivetrain is very weak, you'll be wanting at least Rallye kit or preferable Haldex for a big power conversion.

If you have the 4wd drivechain, you probably started with a 4wd car, so just use that ....

I thought that the Synchro drivechain was the same as the Rallye one ... I know of a couple of VR6 Synchro's that were built without any problems at all (well, no problems for the couple of years after they were built.)

Get a mk2 golf of your liking.
a)Buy an S2 coupe and transplantthe running gear under the golf body.
b)Buy a "quattro" AKA haldex Golf / A3 and transplant the running gear under the golf. Option b has less work than option a, however, option a is a true quattro.

Anything is possible laugh
There is a guy putting an S2 under a mk2 golf in North Yorkshire.
The track width is almost spot on.

Just buy a Rallye it will be cheaper in the end.

Probobly pick one up for £5-6k

Yeah, buy a Rallye less money and less time! There's still a few RHD ones knocking about.

Right got some pics, what you need is a scrapped golf syncro or a corrado to take the tunnel out of but the syncro will have the prop shaft lugs on it.

I used my old syncro that got wrote off

I made a simple jig consisting of two hoops with legs attaching onto the subframe mounts to hold the car befofe i cut out the 2wd tunnel and welded in the 4wd one.

Then you need a rallye rear end which bolts staight onto the back end after you cut away the spare wheel well.

And finally make a rear beam, nothing fancy i used some heavy guage 50mm box between the chassis legs and welded the original diff mount onto it. cant find any pics tho.

Apparently passat syncro`s have a bolt on rear diff mount this is how a friend mounted his to a corrado.

Then it up to you how you sort out the fuel tank i personally plated the floor up and bolted a racing cell to the floor but thats one option.

Rallye`s are good but once you`ve bought it you have the problem of what to do with the peice crap vw call the G60 engine.
Anyway rallye parts go really cheap at the moment maybe £500 for all the transmission so its peanuts to convert a mk2 and you have plenty left over to do the obvious 1.8t swap.

I loved my G60 golf, admittedly the standard was nicer to drive than the rallye! But i would never have described it as "crap"........

It`s because i`ve had better experiences with the 1.8t engine.

Been looking for a while for a forum like this. Does anybody know of someone carrying out a mk2 vr6 syncro conversion? I had a tuned mk2 vr6 and it was the nuts but the power transfer was hard to get down with just fwd so I plan on carrying out a 4x4 exercise with a vr6 and supercharger this time round. Any advice out there? Great posts bytheway.

I believe that the VR6 lump will bolt straight to the Rallye drivechain.

Others will no doubt correct me.

I have seen a Keith Risebrough MkII VR6 syncro but normally aspirated. His website is not accessible at the moment but his photos of his conversion can be found on a google search through images. This shows it can and has been done which is great news. Anymore information/advice would be much appreciated. Cheers.
