Le Mans 2007 Ambulance Project
Discussion
Hi guys, thought you might wanna follow our progress on my mate James's comedy ambulance project which is being put together for the sole reason of going to La Mans this year. James came up with the plan of using an Ambulance so after a quick look about about this fine example was found
After driving it for a short while (well actually on the way home) it was pretty apparent that its supposed 2.3 litre 4 pot auto unit could only muster it to a top speed of about 50mph which was certainly no good for making the trip to Le Mans in June.
The original plan was to plonk a 2L Auto 4 pot in there from a Carlton but up came the offer of a 3Litre straight six auto from a Senator. So the plan was hatched..........
OK so here's the inside to date. When it was bought it had been used as some sort of camper van as shown
First things first, all that was ripped out and in goes some nice parque flooring and two beds with the oblicatory union jack douvets.
Then some stereo (this is just some of it)
There's also a load of extra goodies to come but more of that later

Next comes the donor engine
A memer of the Autobahnstormers car club came up trumps with a 3L 12v Auto Senator which needed its heart relieved. Top bloke all round and allowed us to come up and pull it apart, he even helped get stuck in along the way
So first thing on a Sunday morning we hit the road to the realms of sunny Kent
We get there a bit early so find a suitable cafe for a spot of breakfast
and were very impressed with Mickey's big cock !!
So here was the beast, (btw James is in the blue and then theres me looking about ready to do some theiving)
You may also notice that we forgot the working gloves. So "thinking outside the box" we emptied the petrol station of the free deisel ones available which did the trick
Engine ready to come out
Wooohooooooo out she comes
Which can mean only one thing.........an empty hole !

After loading it in the back of the van we were off back home. (only after we had the push the van off the farm due to wheelspin with the weight of the lump in the back  )
One engine ready for the conversion. My mate Matt promptly demonstrating how long it all is. But TBH he's a bit of a short arse so don't get that impressed

And here's this weekends work, new engine being fitted.
So this pic reminds us of why were doing this in the first place
The engine to be installed (before I'd stripped things like power steering air con, cruise control etc all off it)
So before we can install it we have to get the old lump out
This is what it looked like from inside the cabin with the cover off...
..and here it is from the front
Now being removed complete with existing auto box
Which (yes you guessed it) left us with a hole that now needs to be filled
So with a lot of this..
...and some more of this...
.....were ready to line it up like this

Then we did a lot of this...
...and quite a bit of this..
...which then resulted in a rear mount to support the gearbox arrangement
And this is what we knocked up for one side of the engine mounts
The other engine mount we made a joining piece which went from the original mounts on both the car and the engine. Now this is what we refer to as a "scrap heap challange" conversion so finese and attention to detail is not required on this project
And that was job done, the engine and gearbox sitting in the Ambulance all on the mounts alone. A job well done and took the two of us two days which when we packed up Sunday evening looked like the following
Just a final peice of amusement.......... all week we have been seeing what comedy we could conjour up with the badges we removed from the Senator and with the words VAUXHALL SENATOR 3.0i were going to have this on the back of the Ambulance
So thats a far as we have got so far, ready to be continued next weekend
