Whats the legal status in wearing a helmet whilst driving a car.

I'm out in the Westfield later going on motorway and would like to be able to breath!

Where do i stand?

Tim.

Sounds like sense to me, the damage that could happen to your eyes is more than enough reason to wear one, or at least something to cover your eyes. Met a chap on holiday who had a bumble bee fly into his eye when he was out mountain biking. It stung him for his trouble. His said it was not an experience he'd like to repeat ...

Nope. It's legal - windscreen or no.

I have worn a lid a few times on the road - aero screened Caterhams really do need it - however if you are wearing a full face bikers lid inside your BMW 5 series I would ecxpect to end up getting pulled.

They'd probably call it 'perverting the cause of justice' just because they couldn't identify the driver on the Truvelo picture.

Anyway, I need a tinted visor on mine because I can either wear my sunglasses when the early morning sun is blinding me (and hence focus very far), or I can keep my normal glasses on and put a helmet with tinted faceplate on

and you'd get pulled to see why on earth you were driving around with a crash helmet on. Id be very dissapointed in the polie if they DIDNT pull someone in a lid driving a 5 series...wouldnt you?! Going equipped for starters

I wonder if Madcop could shed some light on this, I can't imagine what the offence could be but I don't have much of an imagination!

I have always been confused why I have to put a thin line through my racing numbers every time I take a car with numbers on, on the road.

Have investigated this in detail with Police locally and also Motor Sports Association ( RAC as was ). There is no reason why one cannot wear a helmet or other headgear in a car. In Stage Rallying where helmets are worn on the special stages off the roads, it can be inconvenient to take the helmet off for a couple of miles to the next one. A few organisers demand competitors take helmets off on the public road to placate the anti’s ( although same anti’s are going to get wound up just seeing competition cars around – IMO they can take their narrow minded views elsewhere )

It had been suggested that a ‘not in proper control’ offence could fitted up if some officer did not like the idea – based on limitation of peripheral vision by helmet. That is absurd as it would also apply to bikers – and the 3 helmets we have chjecked here do not reduce peripheral vision in any way.

So if you want to wear a helmet in a 5 series – carry on.

I've never understood why we have to take off our helmet between stages - surely the sight of a multi-coloured car covered in decals with numbers on the doors is enough of a heart stopper for the antis ...

As for wearing one in a 5 series - you'd just look as if you were on your way to rob a bank

Also, if you've got a roll cage, it positivly makes sense to wear a helmet, even if the cage is properly padded!
