Now I'm quite used to being the only woman in a room full of men working in IT and I like to think I can banter with the best of them but this week something left me absolutely astounded.

I went to an IMechE lecture, as expected I was the only woman in a room of about 30 men, and at the end when it was any questions I happened to pipe up with a comment about how there is a perception that lawers etc. are paid more than engineers (The topic was about educating youngsters to become engineers in order to save the world).

The speaker then called me PRINCESS!!!!! WTF??? When has it ever been okay to call a woman you don't know (or even one you do) princess??? I'm used to some regional affectionate terms, up here in Newcastle everyone is Pet or Hinny, but I have never felt so patronised in all my life!

end of rant...

Yeah! Indeed!

He should have called you Dog, or Cow, or something.

But Princess?!? How rude of him, eh? who does he think he is?!?

If you think that is something to get wound up over, you need to take a chill pill!

If you let it get to you, they've won. Just quietly slip some optrex into their coffee.

It sounds pretty condescending to be honest. You should have emasculated him, right then and there. Somehow.

I'm surprised you didn't vomit in shock at his insolence.

Either it's your time of the month or you need to get a sense of scale. I take it very little happens in your life at the moment for something so trivial to wind you up.

Why do you feel the term 'princess' to be patronising?

As he is a 'techie' he probably doesn't meet many woman and therefore sunconciously puts them on pedestals. He simply called you "Princess" without thinking first.

..having been subject to many training courses in newcastle i'd say that particularly amongst older men it is normal for ladies to be addressed in that way in business...terms such as pet, lass, hinny etc seen as affectionate terms but are ultimately inappropriate

edit: seems i'm in the minority here though!

Just reply, ending your sentence with "Commoner" or "Grandad" or any other inappropriate moniker for him. Don't moan about it, fight back

It's a bit odd, but surely better than being called 'sandboy' or 'bwana' and you don't hear them complaining.

So you got a job in a male dominated trade and didn't expect to be patronised? how naive. And then rant about it on a male dominated web site, and expect sympathy. Ooops.

Because I'm guessing he didn't refer to any of the men by pet names? It IS a bit patronising, but it's a waste of energy to get really worked up about it.
