Hi,
I was looking into checking and topping up my gearbox oil on my 'M' series fitted with a Rover V8 with a LT77 gearbox. The problem is that on doing some research that there are several different oils recommended by different people, including the following:

- Castrol SMX (Fully Synethic)
- Castrol TQF
- EP80
- Dexron III ATF

Does anyone know what is most appropriate for the LT77 Rover gearbox?

Cheers,

Tony.

Thanks for the recommend. I have also been looking round the web and found a number of suggestions for both Redline MTL and Castrol SMX.

I wondered what the difference was and had anyone had any experience of using these oil?

Thanks.

what i was told by a reliable gearbox company ,was that the gearbox is normally run on the thin red stuff to make the gearchange easier ,particularly when cold ,but that this increases wear bearing wize . they recommended runnig a heavier gear type oil to protect the bearings ,and so i run on synthetic 80/90 weight . i dont find it a prob gear change wize. regards robert

Hi Guys, I always use a good quality TQF oil (the red stuff), as the LT77 has an in built oil pump.
If you go to a thicker ep type of oil the pump can over pressurise either blowing the seals or dumping oil from the breather on the top.
Yes, some people do use the thicker oil, but gearchanges can be stiff when cold, and this slows down the synchro`s and bulkrings giving other problems.
The EP oil is normally installed to compensate or hide wear!

I use redline mtl in my 350 wedge. Gives nice smooth changes. Got it from demon tweeks, but it is quite expensive

Thanks for all the advice and I have also been looking at some old threads on Piston heads. Well I have finally decided to go with Castrol SMX (Fully Synethic). I have ordered some yesterday and will let you know how things go.

Cheers,

Tony.

Just to say I have now filled the gearbox with Castrol SMX and completed a short run and all is excellent. Gear change feels better epically in going into first.

Thanks for all your help.
Tony.
