VW Launch Cayenne Rival

Touareg R50 has 313bhp V10 TDI

Volkswagen plans to release the new Touareg R50 at the Australian Motor Show and by doing so they will offer one of the most powerful SUVs around.

The retuned V10 TDI will produce more than the 313bhp and staggering 553 lb-ft of torque of the current car. In addition to monster power the R50 also has larger wheels with road focused tyres, stiffer suspension and a new aero kit.

That's all they are telling us about the car at the moment, but expect to hear more after it’s unveiling on the 11th October.

UPDATE: VW will not release power details but confirm that power WILL be increased over standard 5.0. The words 'generous increases' were used. Sorry, we couldn't find out any more info.

I am ashamed to admit, that looks awesome. I would have one. I normally hate the things, but that does something for me, its chunky, agressive, big, powerful and not as cripplingly arrogant as a range rover or porsche.

TomTVR - you're right, it's the same 5.0 litre engine that's always been in the V10, just a different body kit.

The R range was shown at Frankfurt last month, slight power upggrades on the cars like an extra 20bph on the 3.0D etc........

Another high powered, electronicially controlled monster. Fast but as much fun to drive as a dustbin. I just don't get why vehicles this big need to go so fast? They're never going to be sportscars.

Uh-oh ...how long before there is a track based race series for these?

313bhp, isn't the Cayenne closer to 500?

The Turbo is.

These cars do my head in. I've had a few sitting a couple of inches off of my rear bumper because the owner thinks it's "fast" because of the figures, without taking into account the weight.

I'm not going to buy one but it does look better than the Cayenne, though even VW wouldn't say it's Cayenne rival!

I'm ashamed to say, that whilst sitting behind a V6 Touareg on the motorway last night I actually thought... That looks quite good! Now in general I dislike all SUV type things, but compared to a cayenne it looks good, not that that means much!

Exactly, 313bhp but about 2.5 times the weight of a hatchback with 200bhp

Oh dear. I bought a Touareg V8 purely because it was the most understated of the big 4x4's. This bling, bad-boy, body-kitted, chrome-laden hulk is a monstrosity.

I think you will find its because the owner is not a very good driver. They are quite fast for SUV type cars

Read road tests on this and they say the engine is so heavy that it ruins the balance of the car. Not much balance to start with though!
