HI guys

I am helping a friend replace a snapped timing belt on a 1999 Astra 1.4 16V.

I need some help in fitting the new belt.

We do not know how to set the timing marks in relation to the crank. As its 16V there is a mark on each of the cam pulleys and a mark on the crank.

Where should the marks be pointing to get TDC on No1 so that the belt can be re-fitted?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Tony

As posted on here, I need my cambelt doing and asked a mate who is pretty mechnanically minded (can take of gearboxes, replace most things etc) if he would do it for me in exchange for me buying his drinks for a couple of weeks. But he didn't want to touch it, strongly advised me to get it done profesionally.

If the belt's snapped, you've almost certainly bent a valve, meaning you'll have to take the head off. (although I'm not experienced in this particular engine)

By all means fit a new belt, but check the compression afterwards

Try a vauxhall owners forum, Some engines aren't timed with the engine at TDC, you may have to buy a specific timing tool (they're not usually expensive, I had to buy one for a focus last month about £6 for that)

>> Just read that you had timing marks on the wheels, normally you just line them up, and there's a mark on the block to line up the carnkshaft pulley mark

vauxhalls have a notch on the cam pulleys which line up inboard against the head and line the crank toothed pulley up with the notch on the plastic cover.

If the belt broke I'd take the head off as the valves maybe bent.

very easy belt, helps if you have the tool to drop between cam pulleys but you dont need it,cam pulley marks point to each other-inlet 3 oclock exh-9 oclock, crank pulley belt gear 5 oclock theres a mark there,or find tdc, remembre to turn the tensioner the correct way cus you wont get the timing cover back on.

yes

but its probably bent a valve.
If it has, dont bother getting it repaired, chuck one in from a scrappie- just replace the cambelt first!
