I have the same problem. 2001 Seat Ibiza 1.0 MPI (AUC Engine). It started happening after I recently replaced the spark plugs. It had been running rough on the old plugs, and they were eroded away even though they were platinum and only two years old. The EPC light didn't come on with the old plugs in. Started the day after the new ones.
The car seems to run great on the new plugs. The EPC light is not always on, just most of the time, and when it is, the brake lights stay on too! Can anyone help?

Just in case anyone has the same probelm, it turns out that the EPC light on our car was caused by the two filaments in one of the brake/tail light bulbs shorting across. I figured it out when I realised the EPC light only came on when the side/headlights were switched on and then the brake pedal was pressed. New bulb sorted it.
If the epc light is on and your having engine running issues it could be the common ignition coils failure, which could lead to lambda probe issues or cat problems if left for too long.
It is worth checking out the brake lights because if the brake light switch fails it throws a fault code up and the epc light comes on.
