Never quite understood this.
It seems to me (admittedly ignorantly) that a Daimler and an XJ are the same car sold as two different brands.
What the sweet jesus is going on there?

Basically you're right. As far as I'm aware, the Daimler is the top of the range model, with a better quality interior, etc.

I thought Daimlers were those limo type vehicles that look like pumped up jags, usually seen at funerals and used by the queen etc, aren’t sovereigns the lux model?

thats the daimler limousine, still in production up until 1992 would you believe!

all current daimlers are 'super luxury' Jaguars (above sovereign) with almost every extra plus picnic tables etc.... Plus LWB as standard... They also have a 'fluted' grille.

Daimler were Jaguar competitors until the late fifties, when they were bought out by Jaguar and William Lyons pulled the plug on some of the models he felt were competing too directly with Jaguar (the SP250 and the 104 Sportsman were in effect replaced by the Mk 2 and the E-type). Ever since then, with the exception of the DS420, Daimlers have just been super-luxury Jaguars.

Wouldn't surprise me if they brought it back as a Rolls-Royce/Maybach competitor though.

Now that would be nice to see.

I have always thought that one of the most under-rated cars was the Daimler Super Eight; an absolute delight to drive and deceptively quick.

I think it would sell too. The Rolls-Royce is superb but stately. The Maybach is ugly and showy and selling badly, but I feel that a bespoke Daimler model could fulfill the criteria for a sleek, low-lined limousine, perhaps in the Maybach mould but with heritage behind it and less by way of showing off.

That would work well I think

But in most of the world, Daimler is regarded as something to do with Mercedes.

Which is precisely why the Daimler was not sold in the States; It was called VDP.

One of, if not THE first car was made by Daimler-Benz hence the connection. The Series 3 Daimler Double Six is a beautiful car IMO.

Unless the XF is a success this will NEVER happen. Even with the mighty resources of Mercedes, BMW and VW, had they not been able to share major components with more mainstream models the Maybach, Phantom and Conti GT would never have happened. What Ford model could they use to underpin such a car? Perhaps more relevantly, what Tata source?

Tata source. See what I did there?

Not all Daimlers are LWB -it is a seperate model, another feature is that you can have a Daimler with 2+2 seating- this is probabbly the most obvious difference
