How many miles do you think a 2000, 1.7 L, Vauxhall Astravan will do?

If we say it has 140,000 miles on the clock, and been fully serviced.

How many times does the cambelt need to be done etc on a van that has this many miles?

sorry it is so vauge, but i am thinking of getting a van,(may have to wait until i am 18 though because of the insurance!!!) but i don't want to spend too much (would love a brand new one but that aint going to happen)

cheers.

I believe the cambelt intervals on the diesels was a lot longer then the petrol ones.

Ring up a dealer just to be sure.

I have a 2001 Astra hatch and it is a nice enough car.

We ran a fleet of Vauxhall's at the company i used to work for, they were mainly Astravans...

As mentioned they are pretty much bombproof, Vauxhall recommend the cambelt be changed every 40k.
We used to change them every 4 years or so & the highest mileage one we had was just short of 200k.

Check if the fuel injection pump has been replaced. If not factor in for a replacement within the next couple of years. No hard and fast rules as to when they go but they do eventually go. Not as much of a pain in the backside to change as the 2.0 Di and DTi engines though.

No, just make sure it isn't due and has been done in the LAST 40k

Guy at the place I worked years ago had an Astramax (diesel) van. White, nasty, 100,000+ miles on the clock. (This was around 1993.)

He got a promotion, and was entitled to a company car. MD had an eye on the costs, and suggested that he should use the van until it was worn out before a new car was bought (small business, tight cashflow.) So, this guy thought he would force the MD's hand a little bit, and removed the sump plug one weekend.

over 1000 miles later, he was mightily p155ed off as it was still running ... bit rattly mind, but still going strong ...

Cambelt every 40k, and at that age the oil should be getting changed every 10k.

Mine's done 145k so far and shows no signs of stopping.

Driven carefully you can get 55-60mpg out of them.

It's more a question of the general condition than the number of miles. An 80k car that's been treated badly will be worse than a 150k car that's been well maintained.
