Someone who owns both a Mondeo and a 5 Series.

Nick if you think a BMW is anything less than a 'snazzy badge' (your words mate) then you're basically a gormless ignoramus.

Here's a tip sunshine - get some years and wisdom under your belt, and then maybe you'll start talking sense. There are people here who drive cars that you've never even heard of, cars older than you, and they think you're gormless too.

Don't leave PH. I enjoy a good laugh.

If you can afford to buy and run either of those you can afford to buy and run a slightly older 540i, C43 or any of very very many more interesting cars.

its simple. people buy what they can comfortably afford. people with slightly more money may buy a 5-series. so what. they arent showing off, just want a little more luxury.

I can no way afford a new 5-Series but appreciate the quality of them. Hence I own an old one. Give me a 1994 5-series over a 1994 mondeo any day of the week.
I agree but then I wouldn't swap my 1994 granada cosworth for your '94 525. If you tell me you're BMW is better spec'd and performs better I'll take your word for it but I would be mightily surprised.

Says it all really.

Worst 'my Dad can't even afford a base model BMW and hell is he bitter about it' thread ever.
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Mate my dad could afford a 150000 lambo if he wanted it, but he doesn't. He was under the impression Beemers were fantastic cars, and this was ruined as soon as he drove the Mondeo. Better steering, better acceleration, better price....oh, and it hasn't blown up. I just feel so many people buy certains cars because of the badge, and it just screams out to me that they are too bothered what other people think of them. Inscurity over brains, is what I say.
I agree - I have inherited an Audi A3 2.0TDi (company car) and my wife has a Focus 1.4 CL 3 door - we both agree that the Focus is a far better drive, handles superbly but is probably only worht 1/8 of the cost of the Audi. Haivng driven Beemers in the past I think they're great cars but Ford have also produced some brilliant, affordable drivers cars in the recent past - the Focus and Mondeo in particular. Ford gearboxes are the best in the business - bar none.

Is it just me or does he remind anybody of what Southpaw was like when he first joined? hehe (sorry Southpaw)

I'm taking bets as to what Nickthett looks like. 10-1 he's spotty, ginger, short and wears glasses. That would at least explain the agressive attitude he has!!

Anyway, back to my original questions, which you still haven't answered

That just reinforces that you're a , and so is your dad.
And saying things like that means you're a tit. BMW drivers are, more often than not, cocks, and deserve to be humiliated.
But you're a cock as well, so does that mean you deserve to be humiliated?

Out of interest, what type of car do you drive?

Nick you are digging yourself a hole sunshine.

Mondeo better than a 520?? Fair argument that often has been done. I am pleased your father is happy with his purchase. If he had bought a 520 then you would be looking down at the Mondeo owner. It is similar to going to a grammar school. Some pathetic people thing comprehensives are awful, but public schools are stuck up. Stinks of arrogance and so do you.

Your posts get worse here on. Why does a BMW driver have a small penis. Surely if this was the case many less endowed men would suddenly switch to a Mondeo, is that what your Dad did.

A Mondeo 2.0 will be similar in performance to a 520i. It's lighter, class below so should give it a good match. Does it make it better....no! Out and out performance is irrelevant. Did you father ask the small penised man whether he had his foot to the floor whilst he was ringing it in his Mondeo. I think not. If your obesssed with performance try nailing both at 50 in 5th. The BMW has torque, its not a sports car, the Mondeo wouldnt move.

The cars do different things. A 2.0 mondeo is a high spec model, the 520 is a low spec model, they kind of overlap ever so slightly. I dont blame people for getting a Mondeo each to their own. But they depreciate much more, are not as built as well, dealers are pants and unlimately have less going for them. but that is merely my opinion.

This whole thread is rubbish. I, own a MINI Cooper S. I beat a 7-Series of the lights the other day. He is such an idiot and therefore must have such an ugly wife confused He may not have been bothered about racing such an idiot, whilst he sat in his luxury cabin going about his own business. Indeed why would he see the need to race me. This is how you come across. The cars are different end of.

As an aside if a 520i pulled out and your father nailed it he would muller you. Not because he had a 520, but because he had the momentum. By the time the Mondeo had got up to speed the 520 would be long gone. And vice versa. Therefore what you say is shite and as far as I see it so stupid its unreal!

Anyway glad he enjoyed his time with his Mondeo, but like many Mondeo owners one day he will buy the BMW he, im sure, secretly wants and you will eat your words.

smile
You're so wrong. The BMW my dad almost bought blew up at 110000 miles. Our car is still going strong at 113000. So who's laughing now? And yes, my dad's car outdid a BMW 520i. And it'd do it again. And again. In fact, it's such a better car it's possibly the best all round car I can think of. It's economical, reasonably quick, comfy, reliable, has no stigma attached to it like a BMW (which is sad, but if you're all so image concious as you seem to be, take it into consideration), and is also cheaper. I'd never own a BMW ever. They ruined Rover, and anyone who ruins a British Marque will never have respect from me. *evils towards Smolenski*
Using your logic then the family Nova with over 300,000 miles on it is better than the Mondeo, so using some complicated maths and a little bit of creative thinking, that works out as you not having a chuffing clue you cretin.

ROVER RUINED ROVER you ignorant buffoon, not BMW.

Dave!

hehe One more for the "Virtual Variety Sunshine Bus" here biggrin

Anyhoo:

I've driven loads of different Fords, over my years anyhow, and quite frequently have hire cars dropped off for my travels around the country.

Now then: Seeing as the band of car I can have doesn't allow V8's and/or big scary RWD monsters, I have to 'choose' my preferred car.

I always, inevitably, choose a Ford Mondeo. I may get varying specs depending on whats kicking around - I've had 2.0TDCI Titanium models, and lowly 1.8LX models. All perfectly good cars - excellent for hacking up and down the motorway with the cruise on, and the radio playing. I do like them. I would certainly recommend them to anyone - there's nowt wrong with them, and they're reasonable to service and run cost wise.

I've also drive various Foci, and enjoyed, as with the Mondeos, their lovely snicky gearbox, and precise steering and chassis (when not shod with P6000's) and the fact that they just get the job done.

I've also had a Merc C220, and several Passats over my time, however these, the dynamic cars they are not, are much better built, and everything just seems to feel better.

Now I've often pondered over what I'd have come Company Car time, and to be honest, as much as I may want something that'll set my pants of fire come the Milton Keynes roundabout rally, however, seeing as much of my driving is spent droning up and down the motorway, I want something that is a nice place to spend time.

Having had the choice of a lower spec BMW (or Merc or similar - Audi have very well regarded interiors for example) with proper wheel drive (even if the engine won't trouble it) or a higher spec Mondeo - I'd probably go for the BMW (or Merc/Audi); I spend a lot of time in it so I want to enjoy sitting there. No wonder why 116i's and 118d's sell so well, as they are lovely little cars to drive and be in - never mind what they look like from the outside, nor whether they can large it johnny big potatoes on our friendly big roundabout...

A Mondeo is an ok place to spend time - however the seats aren't all that great, and the interior gets very boring very quickly, and wtf the do they make they indicator stalks out of - they feel like they'll snap off if I yank on them too hard. It's the little things that makes it all worthwhile.

Now then, after all that, once I've got home from my trip to the other side of the country, handed my hire car back, and jumped back into my BMW, I start it up, the big straight six making the car feel just, well, 'right' and put my hands round the lovingly designed M tech steering wheel, and do my mirror signal, marvelling at the feel of the well built indicator stalk, and pull out, enjoying the tight, strong and secure feeling as I accelerate linearly and creamiliy up the road. Again, little things, you know, like the very tight feeling helm, or the floor hinged accelerator, the dashboard seemingly made from a solid lump of granite, with no squeaks or rattles...

All this in my 10 year old £4000, 135,000 mile 2.8 BMW - the price of a five year old Mondeo 2.0l with 80k miles.

I think I make my point clear - yes, your dad may have destroyed a 520i, but taking that into account, by rights, my 328 can easily destroy any BMW.

However the only reason why I have overtaken M Cars etc is most probably because they weren't really trying.

So Nick, here's a torch and a snorkel, cos you've got your head so far up your arse since you've been talking out of it, you'll need it for air and finding a way out...

So to recap: what we've been observing in your posts lately (or pretty much from the beginning) is merely the angst of a fat, teenage shortarse? wink

You'll grow out of it. Well, probably not literally (at least not in a vertical sense) - but then you could always buy a flash car to compensate. May I suggest something Bavarian? one of the big'uns with the smallest engine would do...

A Fiat Punto. Il ike it, it's economical, and it's got 5 doors, unlike many of my friends which have 3. It makes a great taxi on a night out too (I dont drink). For someone my age, it's a damn fine car.

Nick,

I do agree that some will buy the BMW at least in part since they perceive it to be a 'prestige' brand. (Perhaps in 1985 it was but it is much less of prestige brand today). I would also agree that Ford now make some very good and very under rated cars (in particular the Focus and Mondeo).

As an owner of many BMWs over the last few years (328Ci, 330CI, M3, 320TD, and an X5 [which I still have]) I feel qualified to comment. I believe that they are very very good cars. I like driving them, I like the way they look. The build quality is excellent (my X5 has better interior build than my 911 does). I don't believe that they are a prestige brand any more and neither do I buy them to enhance my sense of selfworth or to make up for some sort of deficit in the trouser department. I do not drive them (or any other make of car) aggressively. For me they are one of the best overall packages around at the moment and are well worth the money. In short I choose BMWs because I like BMWs. This is my choice.

I think you will get more from Piston heads and made more friends if you turn down your atitude a bit. This site is a great source of information, entertainment and debate. If you made the same points about BMWs in a slightly different way you would get a much better response.

Given the strength of your views can I be so bold as to ask :

1. What BMWs have YOU (not your family / friends) owned?

2. How many miles have YOU driven (not travelled but actually driven)in BMWs?
