SOTW: Audi Coupe

Last night's TV got us thinking...

Having tuned in to Ashes to Ashes last night, the eighties cop show spin-off to the BBC's Life on Mars, we have come over all nostalgic.

It got us thinking about how the PH team could bark ‘fire up the quattro’ every time we pop down to M&S for a sandwich.

As you can probably guess a lovely original Audi Quattro turbo like the one in the show would be silly money, so we tried to use a bit of imagination.

The original turbo quattro pioneered four-wheel-drive for production cars and was an instant classic.

The Coupe GT was Audi’s stab at offering a bit of quattro glam, but in most cases without the, er, quattro.

Alright, so ‘fire up the front wheel drive’ doesn’t have quite the same ring but at the least the car looked a bit like the turbo quattro, albeit without the dished wheels and lairy wheel arch extensions.

The Coupe did share the turbo’s solid build quality and robust engineering, although was a bit on the lardy side.

This meant that it wasn’t exactly a firecracker in the performance department – 0-60mph was 9.3 seconds for the 2.0 litre and it would struggle on to 115mph.

The Ronal alloys made the car look a bit under-wheeled and while the handling was reasonable it did tend to wallow somewhat.

One thing the car didn’t lack was style and these cars still look good today.

The Coupe GT did come as a quattro but these are incredibly rare, the two-wheel-drive models having been far more popular.

From 1981 to 1988 the car was offered with a normally aspirated 1.9 litre carb engine, 2.0 litre and a 2.2 litre 5-cylinder with four-wheel-drive.

Strangely, while the turbo models often came in strong hues such as red and white, the GT could be commonly found in a kind of metallic beige/gold.

The one we found is a 2.0 litre and it is on a D plate.

The good news is it only has 111,000 miles according to the owner, who claims it is ‘totally original’ and ‘1st class’.

We can’t argue with the fact that these cars are future classics, especially with the current interest in all things eighties.

You’ll get a cd/radio and mutlichanger, immobiliser and central locking, plus service history, six months MOT and tax until the end of the month – and all this for £500.

Add another £50 for a pair of white slip-ons and some fluorescent socks, and you’re ready to go…

Ad reads: 1987 AUDI COUPE GT 2dr Coupe.

Manual, 111,000 miles, Totally original 1st class example of the audi classic. Excellent drive, A1 engine, faultless bodywork, good tyres and alloys, fantastic interior, no rips or tears, sony cd/radio and multichanger, sunroof and central locking, immobilser fitted. Service history, 6 months MOT and tax till end of feb. Absolute bargain. Need quick sale hence price, as wife about to have baby no 7 !!!!. £500. ono

We have owned two Audi Coupes, both of them quattro non turbos. They were great cars, much missed. They made a lovely noise and had a real feeling of having been fantastically well built. Good choice for SOTW.

Just noticed the end of the ad... "need quick sale as wife about to have baby number 7!"

Does that mean the coupe can hold 6 babies???

I've heard through the grape vine, an original low mileage Sport quattro recently sold for £90,000+

I owned a quattro turbo for ten years and never regretted it once, fantastic car, solid and brought a smile to many faces in my ownership. Sold it two years ago as it sat in the garage for months on end, obviously, now as its brought to the public eye, i wish i still had it. However i think there will be a dark side to owning one now, although i can see values rocketing, the amount that will get stolen will also rise, im sure, plus you will get the usual green-eyed monsters.

Having said that i passed the car onto a new owner who loves it and looks after it the same way i did, glad to see it surviving 20 years now and hope it lasts another 20.

Reckon if you offer him £400 you'd get it. He could still buy a reasonable TV for that. He obviously needs one!

I nearly bought a 20v Quattro none turbo Coupe back in the early 90's, thing that struck me was the interior space.

I had the 2.2 Quattro and it was great fun.....till the oil pump pressure relief valve went tits up. pretty solid beasts with galvanised panels so rust isn't, usually, a problem

I had a 2.2. Great motor, did us 4 up with all the gear to Le Mans in '99. Sloppy handling but great 5 pot warble!

Not really. My old FWD '88 2.2 (the 140PS 5-pot one) tipped the scales at 1050kg, which isn't bad for a fairly big car.

They were bloody good machines. Mine sat in a corner of my drive for 2 years, without being touched, yet started first time the moment I connected a jump battery. It then sailed through its MOT (after a rear caliper change) and drove down to Rimini on the Scally Rally at a steady 100mph, returning via Ingolstadt, the Stelvio Pass and the Czech Republic. It simply will not die.

And the noise... If you're going to buy one, go for the 2.2. The other engines are bit puny.

Slightly off tpoic but obviously related to the story, was it just me but were all the cars in Ashes to Ashes a bit wrong ?

The Quattro's great but it seems to be on a V (ie 1979!) and if anything it looks like a later one from the headlights. Also Granada and Cortina area cars in London? From what I remember it was all SD1's and Aleggro's with CID using Avenger's and Hunter's. As for coke dealers driving ratty W123 Mercs, mine had a nice BMW 633!
