"In the UK, the first 20 Maloos have been snapped-up
by speed-obsessed English eccentrics. They join their Australian counterparts,
who'll stick a motor on a bathtub for a bit of a laugh."
I think there's a company in Blackpool that does something along these lines...
God help us if the plumber in the white van who was nudging my rear bumper on the M1 last night ever gets his hands on one of these !
Has anyone out there driven the Holden saloon ? Any good ?

To me it seems totally pointless.

The ute is an Australian icon, it's a bit like 4x4s driven by people who've never been to the countryside, ute's are driven by people who've never done a day's hard work ! A performance ute may seem stupid over here, but it's bound to appeal down under.

cool ! - but I prefer the Ford/Harley F150. This ain't macho enough for a PU. My P100 looked 'arder than this, but still an interesting vehicle.

i've driven a Holden Commodore saloon and it is shite. p\Poor build quality, poor driving position, seats really uncomfortable considering the long miles we do. Instument positioning is bad too.
most of these HSV cars and utes are auto too. I had fun leaving them in my wake at the drag strip in my Cerbera! The top of the range which are $100,000 or 36000 quid only do 15 sec quarter miles. I'd have an M3 anyday. there is no comparison IMHO

I should explain "HSV" is Holden Special Vehicles. the Commodore (this model is called the VX) is available as a saloon, Estate and ute (and 2 door coupe called the Monaro in a couple of months) So the HSV Maloo is the sporty version of the VX ute. All cars in the range are available in 4 litre V6 or 5.7litre V8 (chevrolet) form.
did you know the Cerbera has an HSV LSD and fuel pump and a few other aussie bits and bobs? useful for me as there arent many TVR dealers close by!!

I think build quality is a very valid point, I'd hate to return to tacky interiors - but 15 sec quarters aren't all that bad for a *saloon* car !!

Jeez, 8K UKP buys you an R1 that does 10.5 sec quarters, or a Hayabusa that can manage 200mph, but you ain't going to get 4/5 people on one ! The Holden is still pretty damn good for the money, and it would be fun to have one over here, just for the novelty value.

So it don't go as well as your favourite pet car, doesn't make it all bad...?

Actually, I'm probably inviting loads of verbal abuse by agreeing with that Elem geezer - his budget Hyundai looked pretty good. But hey, I drive a Smart car and ride bikes... my view on the world is slightly different to most of you !! (not a critism, just an observation).

cheers lads, Carl

It's horses for courses nicky boy. At 1.00am in cyclone weather, on roads that require major surgery, with all the gear for a ski boat in the back and 1400km to get home I would rather have a vehicle of this calibre than an M3 - even if I could afford one.

It is not perhaps a vehicle for the "I can go faster than you in a straight line set" but perhaps more for the I've got a shit load to carry - quickly, very quickly!!!

Forgot to post the link to the HSV website: www.hsv.com.au/

I quite fancy one of these instead of trying to cram a crate of Guiness into the boot of my S4:

howardo - are you happy with the comfort and build quality? I wasn't for a car costing that much. And another thing that puts me off is they are so common. Every tradesperson has one over in Perth.

Very handy for the Le Mans run, you could easily get all the gear for two people in the pick up bed, plus loads of room for BEER and having a hard cover would keep everything dry.

I like it a lot but then I do like slightly unusual cars.

Jaydee and all, 2 months ago I bought an HSV GTS-R from the U.K importer after 4 TVRs and can't praise it enough. It really is the closest thing I could find to a 4 door TVR in the way it involves you and yet it is also fantastically comfortable, has 410bhp, seems well built (no probs so far)has a lovely noise but very quiet when cruising and was rated very highly in Top Gear, Car ,EVO etc.AUTOCAR had one on long term test and even preferred it to the M5 in many ways (their words not mine!) As you can tell I'm chuffed with mine!

In Australia I have a VX Holden Commodore SS...its the standard car before HSV gets their hands on them. Has the 5.7 with 225kw, 6-speed. Down under they are incredible value (AUS$45K which is less than 20k pounds) with all the fruit. Compare to a WRX for example which is the same price, similar performance, similar build quality, but less equipped, and only half the space.
