I pointed this out to RacingPete (I'm sure it was him) and he said they'd take a look into it. It's to do with the smiley being on it's own line or not. i.e. it'll work here

Try putting a space in front of it, he says experimentally.

It's because the design of PH's smiley processing / character replacement algorithm is borked so a " followed by a ) turns into ") which turns into &quot by the time we see it.

This has now been fudged around by requiring a space in front of the ; but the downside of this is that a wink smiley which is the first thing on a line won't work.

... and we will try and sort the on a new line problem too in the next few weeks.
