Well as well as being a tiny petrol head I am a techno geak (or so my Mrs says!)

I had been thinking long and hard for a while about wanting something to tell me where speed camera are and also some Sat Nav so I started doing some digging and this is what I now use.

www.schford.com/GPS.jpg

Its basically an IPAQ by HP with a GPS Jacket, its very cost effective and provides you with

1 - Satellite Navigation
2 - Speed Camera Warnings
3 - Location of Points of Interest such as Shell stations.

You can get an IPAQ from £150 to £400ish pounds - www.ebay.co.uk is a great source for nearly new IPAQs at vastly reducded prices.

The next thing you need is a GPS reciever now I like the jacket as its a neat solution thats portable from car to car - great when you go aborad and hire a car!

A review is available here - www.pocketgps.co.uk/emtacsleeve.asp and you cna purchase it for £199 here www.handnav.co.uk/html/product.php?brand=EMTAC&category=GPS&PHPSESSID=aa8ffc7997394e72c0cc624a49fa8abe

Now the next thing you need is some software I use Tom Tom navigator as It gives you a great 3d view and allows Points of Interest such as speed cameras and Shell stations ot be imported. See www.tomtom.com, now this is about £200 or so but is freely available on the interent for th less scrupolous among us!

Finally you need to know about the speed cameras pockgps provides these for us FREE!!! See www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.asp

Then you just need a small configurable program that beeps at you when you are within 20 secs and 10 secs of them - the best is www.pocketgps.co.uk/poiwarner.asp.

you can also download plenty of other Points of Interest such as Shell garages from www.pocketgps.co.uk/tomtompoi.asp

Well thats it in a nutshell - let me know if this was helpful, vaguely interesting or whether I shoudl never darken the forums doorstep again!!

I have a Radio CD touch screen sat nav that does all the stuff i want, all it doesnt do is the speed cameras, it lists all garages resaurants etc. Also quarter mile times, highest speed and average speed over a period, also where and what time of day.But of course it aint too cheap, £1800. Your route would seem a fair bit cheaper.Ebay is indeed a fine place to pick up stuff.Iam just about to pop a couple of mobiles on there.

I wouldn't know..

*cough* *cough* KazzaLite *cough*

Sounds very interesting as I already have an ipaq and the rest looks easy to cobble together.. Might have a play around and see what I come up with..

Edited to add: Hey Mods, is this the best place for this thread?

The only observation I would make is that the GPS jackets for the ipaq with the aeriel attached can be unreliable.

The reason is you need to be able to see the ipaq screen which means that generaly you have to mount them well inside the car and so the GPS aeriel can often loose its signal.

I now run the same setup (ipaq/tomtom) but with an external aeriel mounted at the base of the windscreen. Which overcomes the intermittent loss of signal.

The TomTom softeware is excellent, with free upgrades and POI available on the net. There is even a list of all the TVR dealers....

Hi schford

Your little write up got me thinking. I have been wanting to get something to avoid those old speed cameras but the cost has put me off so far. But as I already have a Palm Vx, I now see I can put together a low cost version. If I buy a 'holux GM210' for £110 it will plug straight in. One thing though is that the tomtom soft ware you mentioned does not appear to be available for the palm. Do you know if the other tom tom routefinder type software gives the same functionality that I need?

cheers

I have a similar system running - got a Fortuna GPSmart receiver which is bluetooth enabled, and my work iPAQ which is also bluetooth enabled. Receiver on dash with clear view of sky, ipaq mounted in front of gearstick....works a treat. TomTom - actually bought it, but an excellent piece of software once you get used to it's ways. Directions are spot-on. I have seen a company do a package of tomtom + GPSmart for £270...not bad!

So what's the all up legal aquisition cost of such a package (h/w + s/w) + LASER detector? How much would I save against the GBP 355 for an Origin B2 (incl. LASER detector) on e-bay? [Usual disclaimers] - Streaky

Sportie - the Emtec reciever is superb for this position does not need ot be near the wind screen at all (review shows what a good piece of hard ware it is) what I also love about it is for abotu £15 you can buy an external arial - which takes it in a class of its own comapred to other in car arials and blue tooth devices as if you are unlucky enough to get a hire car with a front heated windscreen you can just lide the magnatisied external arial on the roof!

I have been using TomTom on an iPaq for ages and being the dunce that I am, have only used the programs installed as I'm too scared to break it to start messing around with upgrades etc.

After reading this post, I decided to try and get more out of my iPaq and thanks to your helpfull advice, now have a camera warning system and loads of poi which is very beneficial to me.

Thank you for your clear description of what I need and where to get it.

Got to say that this thread is just the one I have waited for for months. As I already have an Ipaq hi is an ideal route for me.

However in the meantime a friend of a friend is selling their laptop, my laptop is now 5 years old so must be due for an upgrade! I really can't afford a new laptop, even a 2nd hand one, but a colleague has offered to buy my laptop off me.

What I do know is I can't afford a laptop and a GPS unit!

How accurate is the speed camera database? My worry would be that being free, they don't have the resources to keep it up to date.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys - much appreciated. T

the speed camera lists are updated very regularly - with ppl mailing in new camera when they are found and then they get squirted back out as an auto update (if you configre it to do it).

In the north east area, they are missing 9 installed camera's and 1 thats about to be installed. I've done my bit for the community by driving round and logging the long and lat of each one missed.

You can drive safe in Sunderland, SouthSheilds and Newcastle once the list is updated.

Any ipaq or does it need to be a specific model? What about connecting the road angel to the ipaq, easy enough to do?
