AJP or Speed 6
Discussion
Well the time has come to sell my Chim and move on to my next TVR. But here is where im unsure, what will cost me less to run and keep on the road, the speed 6 in a 2000, 2001 Tuscan or 4.2, 4.5 AJP in a Cerb 1998, 1999 ish. I love the look of both and if i did go with the Tuscan it would be one thats had a re-build. Does the AJP need one as well or not?
what do you think?
Thanks.

No the AJP is a V8 the AJP Speed 6 is a straight 6
So, both are AJP`s then. When they first arrived on the scene if i remeber correctly, the V8 was known as the Speed 8 and the V12 as the speed 12.So, there was the speed 6, speed 8 and speed 12, so they are all concepts of the AJP engine.
It just seems that it was the straight six engine that retained the Speed six name?
only a 5-10% chance of needing a rebuild on the V8...

They are very robust.
New speed 6's show promise but its simply too early to tell, not many, if any, have done more than 30k yet...
i will be looking at the same thing again at Xmas time, and my heart always sways to a Cerby, thats how i popped my TVR cherry!
The tuscans are stunning, but dare i say, just not quite as 'brutal' as a cerby?

If you get my old Cerb which is at Peninsula -not only does it have an AJP but I believe it's been rebuilt which gives you the best of both worlds.
Then someone would have bought it - they've had it since March 2007 - it wasn't that bad a car.......
And they've just dropped the price by £2K this week

Although its not a great comparison for everyday driving but according to the times posted on tvrmonster for the Nurburgring, my speed 6 took my car round in exactly the same time (8.49) as bosscerbera's 4.5 AJP. (not sure how up to date his time is though, that was only my second trip to the ring and im relatively inexperienced on track)
I would say though that the speed 6 can probably be driven closer to its limit more of the time than the V8

What do you think is maybe not the best way to get advice. It will always get informed and uninformed opinion though.what do you think?
Thanks.

I prefer the 6 to the 8 - my opinion. I've had both and no serious issues with either. 4 speed 6's and one 4.5 AJP. The AJP was fine, but had no sense of power delivery, no real surge like the S6. I know that folk can get the power from the V8 engines they are suposed to produce, but I was not prepared to spend the extra cash to find out how much of the extra power was snake oil and how much of it was real.
Incidently the AJP was the only TVR we've ever had on the back of a low loader...
Would an AJP or S6 need a rebuld? depends on how its been looked after - neither are the bullet proof package the Rover V8 normally is.

Interesting comment on 'no sense of power delivery'. My 500 Chim delivers power so smoothly that you dont get the same sense of acceleration as our upgraded 2.0L turbo Lotus Europa. But the 500 is quicker. What is good is that all the TVR engines have different character which gives choice, and also debate!
I ran a sp6 tuscan for 3 years and was lucky. Having watched sp6 reliability, you will be lucky to last 15k miles between rebuilds. I think the sp8 lasts longer, but still will cost you a lot more to keep it on the road than the chimp.
I suggest keeping 2k per year set aside for unexpected costs, whatever you buy.
Hope that helps and enjoy your purchase!
