Base A5 Gets More Power
Audi increases entry level A5's power but improves economy

More power, less fuel. Yes please...
The entry level Audi A5 is to get a larger, more powerful engine but with improved fuel economy. The 170bhp 1.8 TFSI is to be replaced by a new 2.0 TFSI with 180bhp and max power is delivered 800rpm earlier at 4,000rpm.
Peak torque is boosted from 250Nm to 320Nm and delivered equally low down at 1,500rpm. The car will now accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds (8.4 seconds in A5 1.8 TFSI) and top speed increases by 5mph to 148mph.
Combined mpg is now 42.8 (39.8 in A5 1.8 TFSI) and CO2 for the six-speed manual version is 154g/km (169g/km in A5 1.8 TFSI). The A5 2.0 TFSI (180PS) is priced from £26,710 OTR and will reach its first UK customers in October.

How have they managed to knock 0.6 secs off the 0-62 time, with only 10bhp increase in power?

I thought these looked dull when I first saw the pictures, but I've seen a few driving around now and have to say they look very nice in the metal. The engine improvement certainly seem to be worth while.

We have had a 1.8T in the office for the past few months and general fuel return has been about 38mpg which is not bad at all ...
Hopefully means the 2.0T should be a lot better in the real world than the current 1.8T ..
Should be good.. love the A5 as a car in general... got to go for the 3.0tdi though to get the best of all ... or the S5 and put the V's to our honest and ever wise leader Gordon ..

I have to say that even though they have been around a while now, I still dribble a bit when I see one. Understated gorgeousness. Some rival manufactureres do not understand this.

Bit soon for an engine upgrade, no?
Residuals are going to take a hit for those who bought the original 1.8T engine. Can see the salesman now giving his "no one wants this engine sir. Will be hard to shift. Trade-in price is........"

This shows just how diesels are going to be soon made reduntant 0-60 in under 8 secs and still achievable 40mpg also at 26k I think it is very good value for money and a very good looking car in the flesh.

I was just thinking the same thing, and don't forget the 50/60p a gallon price difference! The real world journey cost between my diesel Espace and my wife's Jag is negligble. Although a mate has a 3.0tdi A5 that,s doing 40mpg overall and the torque makes it feel like a baby Bentley.

I have the A5 2.7 TDI on a long run 48mpg is real world figures. I cant understand why Audi put the 1.8T in the A5 they only started deliveries of the 1.8 in April now the 2.0 is available just cannot see the sense in it. As said there will be a few disgruntled 1.8 owners

I wreckon Audi really got the A5 right in that case (apart from not making it RWD and putting those stupid chav running lights on it). It looks great, no doubt its built well too.
Im a bit dubious about tuch good mpg figures for the 2 litre. Its a big car, cant be ultra light either. Are they front or 4 wheel drive? Must have got captain lightfoot to drive it downhill in a tail wind to get those mpg figures. Wouldnt low 30's be a bit more realistic?

Read the rest of the comments, then also read up on the technology Audi has out into there new TFSi which has already been linked, and then comment. Those figures are probably not that far off real world figures at all. Also I think the chav ligths aren't that bad a touch, it's not like they've stuck Lexus lights on it or anything. When I first saw an S5 4.2 driving down the motorway a few months ago, the lights just topped off the whole experience. The noise coming out of that car was just phenominal, and the flowing lines make this car beautifully understated.
