They have to have done something special to contain noise with 15.1mp on a aps-c sensor. Same pixel density on a FF sensor is over 35mp!

I ordered a 40D today (very good deal!), now thinking that was a bad move as the price will drop further once the 50D arrives. Tempted to cancel my order and wait (as I have mulled over my purchase for about 4 months anyway), however anyone know when the 50D is due to launch in UK?

Cheers,
Jon

Indeed, how long has the 5D MK II been romoured to be "just around the corner"?

Hi,

I ordered mine today from www.ajpurdy.co.ukthey have some good deals on the 40D packages. However I have waited for a while to upgrade from my 300D and sods law says the moment I order my next camera its out of date! I then read this thread. I know you can never be ahead with technology, however its nice to at least have the latest model. I expect I will keep the 40D, as it has great reviews and is very good value for money IMO.

Cheers,
Jon

The 40D is a massive step up from the 300D in so many areas that for me it was just a question of value for money. I expect it to last at least as long as the 300d which is still going strong after 42,299+ shots (so far excluding the ones I have deleted!).

Its doing some clever pixel binning for lower resolution but better ISO sRAW's

Its official and up on dpreview etc

RG says it'll have 1 to 1.5 stops advantage over the 40D, not too shabby!

With that reasoning you'll never get a back up at allhehe

Looking at a 40Dyes Anounce 50D so hang on for that,
Looking at a 50Dyes Anounce 60D so hang on for that,
looking at a 60Dyes Anounce 70D so hang on for that,

etc, etc, etc,

hehehehe
True.

This sort of tech moves too quickly to worry about residual values - assume that in 3 years whatever you've bought will be almost obsolete and you're fine! biggrin

Although, something to bear in mind - i've had a 350d on a semi permanent loan recently, but had to give it back - nothing wrong with it at all. I've since managed to borrow a 20D, and thats a cracking camera too - and its older than the 350D (but still 8mp).

Just waiting till i can afford my new one smile

This finally looks like a worthy upgrade from the 20D for me - never really could justify it with the 30D and 40D, not enough of a step up.

15Mp, VGA screen, 9 cross-point AF and 12800 ISO does it for me. I know the 12800 will be pants, but you can bet the 3200 will be amazing.

Looks to be in the shops October time so not too long to wait... I'll be buying one for sure although not right away.

Technology does move on at a fair rate but just because something is replaced doesnt mean its no good. I'm still using a 1D MKI with 'only' 4 million pixels which by todays standards many people would deem obsolete, but the quality of image i get is second to none.

A lot of the images i produce you would never know it was taken with only 4m pixels. A4 printing is no problem and even A3 isnt that bad at all, not that i ever need to print that big.

Even the 50D with 15 million pixels i'd still consider it a backup, it would certainly not be my main camera...

I won't be rushing to send back my 10mp camera either, I've never printed at A3, nevermind needing more.

Agree - been using 20D since it came out and successfully selling prints from it - Tim recently did a 60"x40" canvas for me and it was stunning.

I think the only reason I would like more resolution would be to give me more freedom in cropping in some of my portraiture. To be honest it's the better performance at higher ISOs/quieter shutter/better AF that really make me want to go from 20D - 50D.

A bit o/t, but how do I know how many shots I've taken with my 300D?

Yesterday I was in a Curry's store in Harrogate demoing the Canon Eos 40d, love it! I was slightly put off by the megapixel count so decided not to buy it there and then... and after today's announcement I think I made a good decision! I think I'm still gonna buy it, but I'm gonna wait till the price crash. For a cheaper price the 10-megapixels will look more inviting.

Wonder how low the 40D will go, canon won't want it clashing with the 450d.
