I got pulled returning home from York dragway.
I hadnt swapped my 3/4 front plate back.
They gave me a ticket to get signed at a MoT station to prove i had changed the plate and send it to the DVLA.
They also asked about the nitrous bottle between the seats and if i could use this anytime.
I explained it was purely for track use only and the bottle was disconnected.
They then said what a nice car i had and sent me on my way.
Nice.

I recently got pulled on the way back from Spa to Munich. My rear number plate had fallen off. I had no papers with me, no passport, and no licence.
The German police took my works pass with my name and photo, noted the cars reg number from the front of the car, and my address. Within 2 minutes they had confirmed I was the owner and the car was insured. They handed me a producer - not to take my docs to a local police station, but to show any other police that stopped me so I would have no hasttle. They accepted I could do nothing to replace it in the short term and wished me a pleasant onward journey.
Good old fashioned policing.

They said the plate on the chim was illegal - then went on to say that it would probably be ok and they could tell I wasn't trying to be too silly with it.
W*****s! It's been on the car since 2003!
Go and catch some bloody criminals for God's sake - never mind sitting in Tesco's carpark with your nice prawn sandwiches and your bag of crisps.

Look at it this way, if you have a dodgy number plate on your car and it get's nicked, the ANPR cameras that could help get your car traced when it's being driven away won't work.They said the plate on the chim was illegal - then went on to say that it would probably be ok and they could tell I wasn't trying to be too silly with it.

Suppose people just like to moan when they don't get there own way. If you don't have anything to hide, why bother if you get stopped! Smile, be polite and you will never have any problems.
I was talking to a Policeman friend about what i classed as petty issues which people were getting stopped for.
There certainly appears to be a 'target' culture handed down by our illustrious government which seems to focus on quantity of prosecutions rather than severity on a good number of occasions.
Also for various reasons some of our Police are not interested in the reasoned personal approach and will stick categorically to the law regardless of circumstances.. If you have infringed a technicality then you get a ticket..
That is not to say that applies to all Police but very likely a reasonable percentage
If, dare i say, the Government would hand the Police a reasonable budget and Trust Them to direct that into the areas which need it without excessive statistical red-tape then perhaps there would be more home attendance for burglaries or criminal damage and less concern about a numberplate 1 inch too small or travelling at 80mph safely on a deserted stretch of motorway... etc
IMO ultimately the current situation does very little to improve public/police relations.

Fire99 has a point to a degree. You probably see a lot of "road safety" campaign weeks being advertised. These are the main times when you will get picked up on minor or trivial thing's because there is pressure put on cops to get tickets for the stats board but in normal, you won't get a ticket for them, just a warning unless your attitude is wrong, lol!

That just boils my p!ss.. As they say one bad apple spoils the pie. If you have that kinda mentality, why be a 'copper' in the first place?I think by and large most of the public aren't wallies and know the difference between a 'fair cop' for doing something or getting smacked for a technicality... And for whatever reason there is just too much of this 'keeping the red-tape mongers happy' and those who think its another strike against the 'criminal' motorist.

I think the Police should be able to give little 'gits' a smack round the ear-hole and told to run along instead of branding them with an ASBO or something.. But that is going off topic by a fair old margin
