I along with some friends are taking our toys to Wales soon for a couple of days to find the best road that it has to offer, we are starting in North Wales and the top of Mid-Wales (i.e. EVO triangle).

Where are the hidden gems that we need to head for? Trip will be fully pictured so I hope to whack them up on here in a few weeks...

Any help much appreciated!

No good roads here. Get orf moi larnd......

Depends. Some corkers all over the place its just tying them together and how far you want to go south. There is a cracker from Lloanidloes to Machynlleth (or vice versa). Then another Twyn to Tal Y Llyn. Did that going down once and the RAF gave me a brief low level escort, superb.

Not the fastest road in the world though is it? biggrin

Especially the first section before the two water splashes. Some nice blind 1st gear crests. . . .

A4069 is best road in uk imho, needs to be driven west to east (starting nr bethlehem).

We drove it, laughed, turned round and drover it again 4 times. Its an old road rally stage and is used on 5th gear regularly.

The other road that's more scenic and fast in places is the rhydar to aberystwith country / mountain road that runs around the reservois.

I think the B4391 (Bala) is the best road, EVO triangle next.

This site is useful :

Definately the road between Machynlleth and Llanidloes, you won't belive the views.

Also from Builth Wells to Brecon via upper chapel is a great road too.......

I'm so lucky I live where i do biggrin

Accept we gate crashed an army excerise last week up on Epynt, there were 3 squaddies in full camo darting towards us through the woods, quite an interesting experience!

Indeed.

Hence the reason for posting the B4358.

How about the A4069.....

A4212 Bala - Trawsfynydd is pretty good in a fast, sweeping A-road kinda way

From that link Llyn Brianne is incredible. So narrow up and down you really have to concentrate, I had a near miss with a a farmer driving the other way, luckily ABS and a Focus sized gap saved a crash. Took these pics on my road trip through Wales back in the summer would you believe lol. This is a few miles in from Tregaron.

B4391 from Bala to Llangynog is brilliant.

But does anyone know if the B4500 going north from Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant nearby is any good for getting back up towards Llangollen and the Horseshoe Pass? Or would a return to Bala and the B4401 or A494 be a better drive?

That road isnt what i would consider a great driving road, way too bumpy and narrow the A4069 by comparison is like a hill climb with good visibility and switchbacks you can really open the car up through......

It's rather nice up there, but the roads aren't the best (as you've found out not a lot of margin for error and too many blind cresta and blind bends)

Clicky on image twice for full size versions wink

Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge via Capel Seion on the A4120. Seriously fantastic piece of road about 9 miles long, and dead quiet. Very very rarely will you come up behind another car, and even when you do they indicate to let you through. Amazing.

Been there and done that before! Red flag flying but gate open or got lost? Also being nosey but where are you a lecturer because i'm a student in Aberystwyth and know theres a David Jones there.

Road around Nant Y moch Res is short but good fun so long as its quiet and you can see nobody is coming the other way. Likewise the Aberystwyth mountain road, was passed up there the other day in the snow by somebody in a TT who was on it!

A44 is also good again only when its quiet though!
I say just get a map pick a road and explore, most roads in Mid Wales are reasonably fun!
