Lewis Hamilton - F1 World Champion

23-year-old becomes youngest ever F1 champ after thriller in Brazil

Lewis Hamilton has become the youngest ever F1 world champion after a thrilling end to the 2008 season. There were chaotic scenes in Brazil last night after the 23-year-old clinched the title in the final corner of the race. He is now only the second driver to win the title in his second season and beat rival Felipe Massa by just one point.

'It's pretty impossible to put into words,' said Hamilton. 'It's been such a long journey and I'm so speechless. After all the sacrifices we've made I am so thrilled to be able to do this for everyone. It was one of the toughest races of my life - if not the toughest."

With Ferrari-driver Massa leading his home grand prix Hamilton had to only finish fifth. But as with much of the season the Englishman was never going to make it easy for himself and dropped to sixth with one lap to go. The Ferrari team began celebrating as Massa crossed the line but in a bizarre twist Hamilton overtook Timo Glock’s faltering Toyota, which was still wearing dry tyres despite the falling rain.

'The team didn't say anything so I thought I was shot,' said Hamilton. 'I didn't know where Glock was and Vettel was the guy to beat and I couldn't catch him, so at that point I was going to finish sixth. My heart was in my mouth. When it started to drizzle, I didn't want to take any risks but at the final corner I got past Glock and I couldn't believe it.

'I thought 'do I have it, do I have it?' When they told me, I was ecstatic. It was absolutely fantastic, an amazing achievement on one of the most troubled days. It was such a hard race and I'm ecstatic, very emotional, very thankful for my team and my family and everyone who has supported me.

'I have done enough and we made it. I can forget everything else. I need to rest because my heart is on edge. I want to shout out to all my supporters at home - I love them all.'

Thanks for that Thug.

Congratulations to him. Anyone know what happened to Glock? His last lap was 01:44 or something similar. Just a case of the weather?
He was on slicks and it was raining lots. No grip.

I actually felt bad for Massa's family (but not the team - they have the constructor's 'ship after all). Massa was extremely gracious, even if the crowd wasn't. I think booing should be reserved for overt displays of poor sportsmanship - partisan is fine but don't heckle the opposition. If anyone deserves booing its the FIA after this season's farce of stewarding and rule interpretation.

I just hope that Glock didn't slow down to "let" him past, however there's been so much crap this year who cares.

Nice one Lewis thumbup

I laughed out loud at that. Gotta love the way you could see the exact moment of realisation.

Not too worried about the result either way, although I am glad to see a British driver winning and very happy to see such an entertaining race. One of my colleagues, on the other hand, has spent the entire morning muttering Tifosi (sp?) sentiments: "I can’t believe it... oh man... but Hamilton... Glock... oh man... why?” hehe

He can't help it. His hoodie is blocking his view of the keyboard, making it difficult for him to see the keys and spell properly.

Oh that's excellent news, I'm ecstatic!

I think this may well put pay to all those Brazilians who were treating my favoured sports hero with no respect whatsoever.

The fact that Lewis is a coloured gent has probably made his victory all the more galling for them.

Congratulations Hamilton, well done on your fantastic victory.
Please speak properly young man.

It's really hard to imagine that McLaren would chance that, given that the FIA has made it's desire to ensure fair play (rofl) so obvious this year.
