308 State

Man builds Ferrari the hard way

There’s not much I know about building replica mid-engined Ferraris, but I’m guessing that using a front-engined Ford as a basis is just going to complicate things. However, one man in the US clearly likes a challenge because he has taken his 1979 Mustang and turned it into a 308.

How does the Ford four-cylinder fit under the curved bonnet of a 308 I hear you say? It doesn’t, basically, that’s why a rather lovely bonnet bulge has been grafted on. You get a four-speed auto, but sadly no carburettor, which is missing. Just 50,000 miles though, but then again you wouldn’t want to go too far in this thing…

i think his best bet is to present it as an artistic interpretation of a 308, then at least he can hide behind the subjective nature of art

I think the only redeeming feature is that the carburettor is missing: that way, it can't be driven.

Even though it is a heap, I think this guy should be praised for his determination and single minded 'vision'.

This is men in sheds at its very best.

Looks closer to a Ferrari 365GTC/4 than a 308.

If he wanted a 308 he probably could have just saved up another couple of months pocket money and bought one, you can get them for like £15K these days.

I'd prob say something like the Noble M12 GTO is men in sheds at their best - this is simply "A Shed"

Perhaps men in a shed would be more appropriate?

I admire people who have the mechanical and technical ability to build something from basic parts. A good friend of mine built a Chesil Speedster. When finished it looked brilliant, a real credit to the time he had invested. I went along to the Kit Car show with him and there were some great cars present, from Lancia Stratos replicas to the usual Cobra's etc. I completely 'get' why someone would want to build something like that, but I fail to understand how anyone could arrive at the conclusion that this labour of love is anything other than a great hulking piece of rubbish. True, it is a better piece of rubbish than I would ever would ever be able to knock together, but it must take a really deluded soul to even contemplate such a project in the first place, let alone go ahead and build it (and then try to sell it).

Is this in the running for the worst replica awards?

It gets my vote if the prize is that the winner gets scrapped.

Couldn't he have just bought a proper 308? They're not that expensive and don't have an old Ford 4 pot under the bonnet
edit: 308s are a bit more than I thought, but still...
