That wasn't the funniest thing I saw whilst running back. There were people asleep in their cars on station road! Poor buggers. I hate traffic.
Wow - now i know why I was stuck.....glad i risked scraping the underside of my car to turn around and am definatley glad I didn't leave home a few minutes earlier.......don't think wellies would have been much good either, however my friend did say she had a wetsuit I could borrow.....
Many of the UK road drainage systems are getting old, and in many cases are beyond their service life.
Highway drainage is normally maintained by the Highway or Local Council.
Guildfords highway drainage is maintained by Ringway on behalf of Surrey County Council.
The lack of basic road gully cleaning and proper investigation of problem
areas will result in many more incidents like this one at Ladymead.
However unlike pubilc foul and surface water sewers (these are maintained by the Water Authority which in Guildford is Thameswater) Highway drainage is being allowed to fall into a very poor state of repair.
At least the Water Authorities have a capital programm for upgrade and repairs of infrastructure sewers including upgrading of pumping stations and treatment works
Very little money is being spent on upkeep of roads and the infrastructure
of drainage systems.
Come on SCC get yer finger out.
They underspent their budget by a massive sum last year.

I totally agree with you about the lack of upkeep and lack of modernisation. Yesterday, once again, proved that fact.
But was the flood not caused by the Wey (think thats the name of it!) bursting its banks after an obscene amount of rain in a short time?
Is this a cause of us building on flood plans and not allowing water coures to take their natural route?
Can any drainage system cope with this kind of influx of water, especially as it happens so infrequently to make it finanacially viable?
Oh, and can some one explain to a member of Surrey Police Force that a Volvo won't go through 4 foot of water even with blue lights on!! I admit I had a very smug look on my face as I towed him out, shame I forgot to get photos!

Just for the record I was not saying that poor maintainance was the cause of the Ladymead flood however you hit a good point with Flood Plain developement.
But what are the Environment Agency doing about river and stream maintainance.
Very little from what I can see.
I attended a recent flooding forum in our village and got the Council & SCC guys a bit flustered as I challenged their poor approach to regular maintainance and gully cleaning.
Was told there done every 6 months on the A322. (Yeah Waddever)
Replied - Not much use clearing them if your carrier drains are collapsed and rooted, also asked them if the gully cleaning crew cut the grass, to which they both looked puzzled.
Until I pointed out many gullys had grass growing out of the gratings.

We were talking to a very mature SCC resident today who was very nearly flooded yesterday and she was saying that she remembers the rivers etc being drrudged, cleaned and generally maintained at least once a year, but not now. Probably some welly stampers somewhere trying to save tadpoles!
Give BiB his due, he had waded out of his car before he flagged my down so was wet to waist height. He was then happy enough to be taken out on the back of my pick up truck to attach the tow rope. Think the car is a bit worse for wear though!
When our road started to flood awhile back, we realised that all the drains were blocked and had weeds etc in them. We had to clear them out a bit quick and now tend to keep an eye on them and clear if required. But it shouldn't be up to us, round here gully cleaners are things in myths!

Maintainance Contracts with Cement Companies & Brick producing plants and some Local Authorities and a University.
However cannot get Highway Works anymore as it all goes to the big companies.
Spent many years with specialist equipment sorting out drainage issues for SCC and the SERC.
Now the big companies use contractors well out of this area so the local small business with local knowledge gets nothing from them.
I could be sorting out local issues and the best time to deal with them is when you get heavy rainfall while the problem is fresh.
No instead I have sites in Gatwick, Watford, Littlehampton, Eastbourne, Boddington, Mitcham, Harefield and today have started one in Bexley.
Roll on Saturday when I go to see England v Austrailia at Twickenham.
