This has been my first gt3, but I’m kind of surprised that my clutch has worn and it needs replacing...?

Originally I had given it in to an opc as there was a bit of a squeak when depressing the clutch pedal more than 3\4 of the way, so they lubricated the cable, but the squeak came back again, especially when the car had been driven for a few miles

I've never hard driven the car out of first gear, just wanted to know if this was normal seeing the car has only done 9.5k miles.

Been told by the opc that this is normal for the clutch to wear out even at 5k miles..

5k miles for a 997 clutch is total rubbish - unless you've been absolutely caning the bks off it.

I've had 30k miles on my current 997 and that's commuting through central London stop/start traffic every day without any problems.

Have you owned it since new? If not, then I suspect the previous owner has ridden the clutch badly. I would be surprised if any owners who respond to this thread have experienced the same rate of wear!

I've done more daisy miles on this car, majority of the miles have been covered on the motorway and i've owned it since new - took it easy for the first 1500 miles, and done 2 trackdays, but ive never thrashed it - hence why im suprised.....

I dont know much about the mechanics of the car, but been told it will cost £700 as they are not charging for labour, otherwise it will cost alot more to do later as the clutch is almost worn.

Never heard that before. Mine's done 10k and seems fine.

Mind you, quite a few have had the rms replaced (there's a new one they now fit). That would be a good opportunity to check clutch wear.

Doubt the clutch is worn at that mileage , take it somewhere else for a second opinion . That "squeak" can be normal with hot engine , only worn when slipping.
I have had a clutch explode on me but that was from wheelspin exiting Druids in a 993 GT2R

Mine same as Geneve and fine, tracked as well although did do the 2k "run in" as p/book but maybe think that this not really needed. whats' that about RMS though...RMS 997 GT3! Really??? Must have missed that if on a previous post?

I had exactly the same problem in my 997s which was put down to a prematurely failed clutch fork and replaced FOC under warranty at 8000 miles. Worn clutch can cause similar symptoms (squeak) but at your mileage, the fact that you have been gentle on the car, and have no judder or slip, my bet is the plate is not worn.

That said, clutches are wear and tear items and GT3's can eat them if they are tracked (my mk 2996 is in for a new clutch at 16,000 miles) - tricky one to prove to an OPC and a contribution is all you are likley to get.

well it can be seen when out whether it is worn or has some other problem. I'd push back and say that if it's worn, you'll take their offer. If it has ano problem, they should fix it.

Hope they didn't tell you that as it doesn't have a cable. If they've decided it's worn having removed it, fair enough (though I'd still want to see it) but if not I'd have someone else take a look.

Even a Ferrari F430 with a paddleshift will match that mileage and they're terrible with clutches.

My point exactly about the wear.. I stressed this to the service chap about the car not been driven hard, but he was adamant that this is nothing unusual about the clutched wearing out at even 5k miles....

The point I supposed which made me agree – well I bottled it to be honest is the fact when he said as its all stripped out they would only charge for the cost of the part £700 not the labour – had I come in again then there would have been labour charge as well....and presumably that would of been allot more...

Seems every time I go in to an opc I seem to be hit with additional costs.
Kinda wonder had I not been so much of a daisy driver would the engine fallen out the back!!!

Why was it apart in the first place? RMS replacement or problems with engine/gearbox?

I can understand suggesting saving the labour cost and replacing it early when you're in there anyway but at such a low mileage I'd at least want them to show me the thickness of the plate compared with new and minimum serviceable thickness to decide whether to replace.

lubricated the cable. As far as I am aware all 911's since the 1987 3.2 carrera with the g50 gearbox had hydraulic clutches. Has Porsche regressed or have I got it wrong ?

This is a prime example of why I hate going to main dealers (of any kind) and having to deal with a service receptionist who nearly always knows less than I do - I want to understand things and be able to say "show me" to the person working on the car.

Ask them to show you the clutch cable rolleyes

The clutchs on these cars onlt tend to fail at this age if it over reved on the downshift, they are desighned to fail in preferance to doing more expensive damage.

I've had the rms replaced twice, first effort not being totally succesful and now have the new version fitted.

As for clutch wear, mine was checked both times rms replaced and no problems. Now done 17K miles incluidng 6 trackdays.

Try and get in touch with the owner of the 29k miler 997GT3 - he was selling it recently - think it was slate grey. It had alot of press on here due to his 'low' price due to mileage.

See how many clutches he went through in 29000 miles.
