Just wondered if anyone has replaced their speakers in their 996? I have changed stereo unit but speakers are stock . I don't have door ones just dashboard and rears, it sounds ok with stock but wanted to know if it makes a big difference changing to decent ones. My local Indy is doing an upgrade at moment using Alpine speakers.

thanks

I'd be interested too; I'd like to replace the 4 standard tear-drop units.

Woogie, who is the dealer you speak of?

However bad yours are, I cannot believe though that the system itself is anywhere near as bad as the one supplied in the GT3.....I have 2 speakers (as far as I can make out) and the sound although clear is so devoid of any bass that an old mono transistor radio could do better.....smile And the GT3 doesnt sound as good as my 964 either......in that department I would say I had it better before....sigh.....

Good luck , let us know how you get on!

Christer, in the interest of weight saving Porsche fitted covers in the rear and no speakers, however, they did fit the wiring........

Get some rear genuine rear speakers - come complete with correct cover / colour etc, then you will be 100% better......

But still only at the stage that the OP is at!!

The MKII CS doesn't have rear speakers, the comfort version does.

I have done a speaker upgrade recently, both front and rear to my MKII GT3.I wanted to keep the look as stock. It's a bit of a faff, but I'll write up how I did it.

What you need to buy

The speaker grilles all need to be replaced for blanks (4 x Speaker blanks part no 996.645.049.02.01C) They are all identical so you will need 4 for front and rears. This is because the existing grille mouldings for the bass/mid units are raised and angled forwards, making it difficult to attach new ones. This also gives you the option of replacing the originals at any time. These cost £19.30 each

Then you will need to buy some VW connectors and repair wires to connect them to the original plugs in the loom, so that you can swap them back if need be.The wires have a terminal on each end, so you need one wire per speaker, and cut them in half. (4x VW Speaker Connector: 1HO-906-712, 4 x VW Repair Wire: 000-979-129). These cost around £12 all in from your local VW supplier.

You will then need to buy the speakers themselves. I bought 2 Pairs of Pioneer e-motion TS-E1076 co-axials as someone recommended them to me, they fit well and have a seperate tweeter and mid/bass unit together. I could have used a seperate Mid/bass unit and tweeter, but I didn't have time to find out which units would fit and would work well with the mid/bass units. They're nice speakers with a Kevlar weave. I bough them off Ebay for £59.98 for the 2 pairs.

Fitting Them

I marked a 10cm circle on the rear of the speaker grille blanks with a compass and cut them out with a flat blade fitted onto my soldering iron. With some careful positioning, I was able to get 3 self tappers to hold them on the grilles, and bent down the other tag. I also 'burned off' the two protruding bits of plastic found between the tweeter- mid/bass blank areas.

I attached the connectors to the wires and the wires to the speaker tags (making sure I didn't invert polarity). I then undid the existing grilles in the car using an offset Torx key (can't remember what size), and pulled them out, and fitted the new ones, new VW connector to existing VW connector.

Job done. Total time - around 2 hours.

I noticed an instant massive improvement. Much more defined/deeper bass (ie not the one note thumping from the old units), much clearer mids, especially at higher volumes, clipping at much higher levels, and much better treble extension.Voices sound so much more open, and there is much less congestion in complex music. There is still not much bass, But I wasn't about to install bass units in my car.

Any quesitons feel free to ask

Mouse, that's awesome. Well done.

What's your fee to do the same again (4 speakers) and post them to my home address? I'm serious!

My local indy below, I may go for 4 speaker option.

We have been working for some time with the car audio division of Alpine to develop a 996 speaker package for several months and are very close to finishing the testing phase with two customer 996s currently testing the package. This work has been driven by the demand for a solution and by the poor quality of installations we have seen in person and on the internet.

This current package has been designed to use standard speaker grills without damaging or modifying the car in any way and to look totally standard while outperforming even the 996 optional Bose speaker package.

Testing will be complete in the next 10 days. Once testing is complete we will be offering the speakers at a special offer price of £300 for a 4 speaker car, and £400 for the 6 speaker cars with free fitting or free delivery for mail order customers until the end of december.

Once the special offer period is over, the price will go up to £400 for the 4 speaker cars and £500 for the 6 speaker cars, with installation costing £50 on 4 speaker cars and £150 on six speaker cars. or delivery being in the region of £20 for the 4 speaker cars and £30 for the 6 speaker cars.

Hi Mousem40, thanks for taking the time to write that up, I've just bookmarked for future reference!
Quick question, what head unit do you have, I had assumed that it was my HU (Becker CDR22) that was the problem as there is a large disparity between the radio and CD quality, I assume that would still be an issue even with better speakers?

Hi Chris,

Yes I agree the source is rubbish, but you can always upgrade that later, as well as new wiring, monoblock amps under the seats, Deflex panels behind the speakers etc etc, just depends how far you want to go.

Nevertheless, this speaker upgrade still makes a big difference as the old Nokia units seem to be the weakest link.

My 996 speakers have been replaced with custom enclosures and JL Audio speakers, all within the doors so it looks stock.

Also Genesis power amps hidden away, Alpine head unit and CD / MP3 unit and iRiver hard disc player.

I prefer the sound of this miles over the pants stock system and even more than the nasty Bose in the 997s.

I had my speakers changed last week. The nokias were replaced with custom fit alpines,2 in dashboard and 2 at rear . ( I dont have door speakers)

I also had a powered sub fitted, one below. It was going to be fitted under the drivers seat but as my seat is partly manual it could not be fitted there as there is a large piston in the way. So it was either at the rear on in passengers footwell . I decided on passsenger footwell, it's hidden under the mat so you can't see it. Not too sure if it will remain there but did not want it in view at the rear. As for the sound, well it's fab. I could not get more than volume 14 on my Alpine stereo before, now I can get 22 and bringing the bass down on the speakers and using the sub for bass is a vast improvement.
