BMW 840Ci newbie
Discussion
I have recently bought a BMW 840Ci, and was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on reasonable ways to tweak/increase the performace of the car.
Also i have been looking into fitting an aftermarket induction kit, i have tried a couple of cone air filters so far, one of them being a K&N intake kit from a 7 series. It sounded awsome as i planted it but shortly after starved the engine of air. Is there a cone air filter big enough for my car, and is it actually worth changing it?
Thanks
Kieran

You need to get yourself along here: 8er.org
Lots of UK as well as international owners.
I'm no expert but I don't believe there are simple ways of increasing performance, though I do recall re-mapping of engine and gearbox.
(Wayne Blackwell on here who has a beautiful 840 Ci Sport).
Other than that it's turbos or supercharging, or a CSi.

The only way to get any noticeable performance increase from this without supercharging is to reprogramme the ECU which will give a little more power, (+15ish) but greater response and driveability, and also changes the transmission programming.
K+N's are not a good idea and it will feel/sound faster with sports rear silencers or modified stock silencers.

As everyone has said, no cheap way to get any worthwhile additional power. A re-map may make it slightly more responsive but not enough to get excited about. They're not cheap engines to tune.
The best way to make the car faster is to lower it, stiffen it and generally tighten things up. I'd recommend Eibach Pro Sport springs, Bilstein gas shocks, negative camber front strut mounts and M5 track control arm bushes. You'll carry far more speed through the corners, the car will turn in far better and it'll feel 500kg lighter through the twisties. When properly set up, an 8 series will surprise many a press on driver across country.
Then, of course, you'll really wish you had more power!
