High Mileage 5 Series'
Discussion
It's the things like the turbos and suspension stuff that worries me at this mileage.
It should however have a fair amount of paperwork, so hopefully some of the scarier stuff has been replaced and is still in it's youth.
I need the car to last at least 4 years under my ownership, so it must last.

A replacement turbo is usually £600. Not sure on injectors - however if you find out what these could cost then the cost of a warranty to cover these potential issues then you make the judgement call.It should however have a fair amount of paperwork, so hopefully some of the scarier stuff has been replaced and is still in it's youth.

I've just been through exactly the same dilemma, high mileage diesel or petrol?
As I don't do many miles I've just put a deposit on a 100,000 mile petrol 530i.
I was scared off the high mileage diesels due to cracked turbo manifolds, injectors, and the rumour that over 80,000 miles the turbo is guaranteed to blow at any minute.
This was after reading a few BMW 5 series owner forums, one guy had to do the whole of the above on a 3 year old E60 5 series.
I can live with an average mpg of 24, diesel is more expensive in any case.

It's a difficult one.
I'm not so bothered about he engine itself, i dare say these were built for high miles. But it's the Other bits, turbos, water and oil pumps, suspension, diffs, cluth etc. that i would be worried about.
Anyway, the wife seems to have her heart set on a 407. Anyone any experience of these?
And thanks to whoever changed the title!

a 407 or a 5 series....
One thing to remember the vast majority of people have no such problems with their high milage BMW's you'll only ever see the one's with issues posting up online.
What is your purchase budget? £2k or £5k?
Other thing is if you are this worried about future failure of components I'd say dont buy one as you'll be forever worried oh it might let go.

Turbo? It could go, but I took a 530d well past 100k with no problem.
Suspension components, on the other hand, seemed to wear out pretty quickly. Can't remember precisely what it was - front wishbones I think - but that was the expensive bit of the servicing. Other than that, no issues at all with engine, gearbox, electrics, steering.
Recommended.

Welsh - i have a figure of £4k in my head. Loads of 5's seem available for this price, but the wife doesn't like the idea of an auto. Women!
I think i would be continuously worried about something going wrong, i've had this feeling with a 200SX i had that was about to go pop at any time. so i dunno. Do i bow to pressure and put more money in the pot and get a 407?

DONT GET A 407.
Instead I'd say opt for a Leon, Golf Mk4, Bora, A3, A4. With the VAG's there certainly doesnt seem to be the same issue of turbo & injector failure as BMW seems to on web forums.
For £5k you would be in a Mk5 Golf yes with up to 120k miles but thats fine. Or what about an S line Audi A6 great underrated car. Or a Passat.
With regard to the Auto vs manual. Most 530ds were specd with Auto as its a top end car very very few stick shifts. The auto is excellent though & MPG isnt actually that bad when you look at the £ difference per tank - you could assign that extra tank cost to saving you having to constantly change gear.
One word with regard to changing the suspension. Firstly this is a £4k car & well over 100k - so yes it will be worn but provided it passes its MOT I'd not bother. Its all well and good doing all that work but its expensive and given the suspension on it is still MOT passable keep the cash in your pocket. If its on its way out - choose a different car as there are plenty to choose from.
