PH Fleet: Mitsubishi Evo X FQ360

Our new arrival has turned out to be something of a soap dodger...

Darth Vader just out of shot
Darth Vader just out of shot
You may be wondering why my brand new Mitsubishi Evo X FQ360 is looking so dirty in these pictures. No, it’s not a poor attempt at some kind of rally chic it’s because GKC has gone and broken the local carwash.

In a last minute attempt to clean off the slush, mud, salt, and everything else that the roads have thrown up, I thought I’d nip down to the petrol station. But the giant Zanussi was having other ideas. It was all going well when I drove in but the sensors took one look at the large rear wing that has been fitted exactly behind the glass pane I use to look through, and gave up.

Not a refusal to clean the car give up but a ‘we need to call an engineer’ give up. I decided it would be a good idea to casually smile and leave, vowing to use a kinder method to clean the car next time anyway.

A carwash's worst enemy...
A carwash's worst enemy...
Apart from this glitch life has been good with the Evo so far. At around £37,000 it’s certainly not cheap and well into BMW 335i M Sport territory but the X really is about one thing: going fast. To be fair the interior is not bad; despite a few hard plastics it is a nice place to be.

Well designed too, with a distinct push towards making it cluttered and button-free. Much of this is helped by the slightly baffling optional Rockford Fosgate entertainment and navigation system.

It’s not baffling to use and the sound quality is excellent but having umpteen speakers and a huge sub woofer, complete with its own box, fitted in the left-hand side of the boot seems at odds with such a performance orientated machine. But then what it probably shows is that Mitsubishi knows its market and is not trying to compete with BMW, instead looking for those who have graduated from a line of Imprezas and Evos.

Which has more power..?
Which has more power..?
While we are on the interior it is worth mentioning the seats. You can just imagine the people at Mitsubishi feeling very pleased with themselves when the inked out the deal for Recaro to supply the Evo’s chairs. Quite what they thought when Recaro started bolting in seats that Kate Moss would find tight and with no height adjustment is anyone’s guess.

The ‘carbon effect’ plastic on them is a bit naff too and looks more like an MC Esher drawing than a lightweight material. But at least they do, once you’ve squeezed in, hold you admirably in place.

All of this seems to be nothing more than glitter and decoration around the two main features of this slightly scary-looking machine: the engine and the chassis. First of all the four-cylinder lump that sits up front. If you have to expense fuel on bands based on engine size this is not the car to go for.

Interior is a pleasant place to be
Interior is a pleasant place to be
It’s a two-litre and has been stretched to produce a whopping 360bhp thanks to a serious bit of turbocharging. It may not be much to listen to but the shove that this engine produces is mind-blowing.

There doesn’t seem to be the lag or laziness of the Subaru STI’s 2.5-litre boxer, just free revving response followed by time-warp speed. Forget first, second will do pretty much all you need, savagely shoving you back into the seat. It will rev to over 7,000rpm too and the shove only starts to dwindle just before that.

It’s incredible that with a 0-60mph time of four seconds this is not only one of the fastest cars in the world it is almost supercar territory. If it’s bang-for-bucks you are after suddenly it seems like good value.

So fast the plate has started to slide off
So fast the plate has started to slide off
As far as the chassis goes all I can say is that it has a ridiculous amount of grip and thanks to Mitsubishi’s tried and tested electronics it will allow you to get away with a lot. I’m going to wait until there are a few more miles under its belt to tell you more about the way it steers, but I can’t help thinking it will be devastatingly rapid cross-country. Here’s to the next few weeks…

An automatic car wash?! you should be ashamed!

never driven a post 6 evo, what are these like as a daily runner when compared to evo 5 / 6's? I don't wnat a comfy cruiser but I found the 5 a little bit too uncompromising for everyday and business use.

To add to that it amazes me how many people don't realise that it's not just low mpg it's low mpg on super unleaded!

18mpg on 95RON is much cheaper than on 97+RON.

Makes a big V8 look sensible.

Fuel consumption can be pretty scary. I would say between 18mpg and 22mpg is what you're looking at, although a decent blast will see silly figures. Interesting point about the V8...

My VIII has 385BHP and I normally get between 200-240 miles to a tankful of the Shell Optimax. Thankfully the price of Optimax has decreased!!

Well the ability to fill the tank with urine grade fuel is on of the reasons I went for a super V8 as opposed to an EVO.

Not really comparable in any other respect though.

The pic next to the RS2 makes the Evo look bloody MASSIVE!

I'ne actually never seen an Evo X on the road - or a new hatchbacky WRX/STi either. Sign of the times?

Amen to the price dropping - I get 18-20mpg from my supercharged golf, I nearly wept with joy when I first saw BP Ultimate back under £1/litre.

Same here, although the Evo VII-IX have very small tanks. (Still, 200 miles between fillups can get tiresome, esp when your daily commute is a 50mile daily round trip...)

£37,000

Just had to read that twice...

Thats a quite frankly insane price (IMHO). Ok, some hard core evo owners are going to shoot me down in flames saying it is faster than an M5 or whatever... but I just think thats a mad price.

What price is the top spec STi 330? £30k ish?

I had a 6, 8 and 9. Never understood the fuel consumption - can someone tell me why an evo doing a steady 80 on the motorway should only get 20 miles a gallon whereas a mondeo 2 litre will get twice that. Surely they are doing the same amount of work???
With regard to day to day civility, they were all a nightmare; noisy, bumpy. But when you got a clear road - oh my god!!!
My RS4 is so much more comfy, but whenever the road gets clear i feel the wooly steering, sense the mass, lean with the roll and really really miss my evo's

Umm, it's because the... Right, well, the Mondeo has a 2 litre engine... Ummm... drag coefficients, yes... Umm.. dammit... well, power is work done over time, so maybe time goes slower in a Mondeo? Quick, someone tell us the answer... (goes for more coffee)

Overfuelling to reduce the temperature because of that sodding great 800degC+ turbo strapped to the block?

+Lower compression etc..

Educated guess!

I had a 6 then an 8 up till last year, both great cars. I thought the 8 [ which was an import ] was a better road car, being a bit more civilised. Best MPG I ever got was 27mpg, worst 16 !
I did seriously look at the X, but apart from my local Mitsi garage refusing to let me test drive one, despite there demo being available, and myself being a regular customer [ there excuse was you need to make an appointment!! ] I thought the lack of a 6th gear which really helps whilst cruising, smaller boot with a fecking great big speaker box in the way were down points.
However, in the end, due to the price being too high, and ugly IMO, put me off.
They are great driving cars though.

Best looking Evo so far imo, but I wouldn't pay 37k for one even if I had that to spend on a car!

But please, please don't ever take it to an automatic car wash again, that really is diabolical, especially with a black car!

I read a letter in the back of February's EVO from a guy again about what to spend his money on and they recommended an Evo VIII or IX. They did point out that they would grin and bear the mileage and the servicing.

It was then I realised how often you've to service the things. Every 4500 miles? And at £260+ at time?!

Not for me thanks. I've love a go in one but owning one, no thank you.

Could be overfuelling I suppose. I doubt it's the compression thing - the turbo makes up for that. Turbocharged cars should be more efficient!

How lossy is the drivetrain?

I'd assume gearing and boost comp would have something to do with it, good point about the drive train. Mate had a slushmatic n/a Forester and I remember being surprised how crappy the economy was on the highway
