I have never come across this prob with any other car but this weekend decided to give my wheels a good clean. So jacked it up to take one of the back wheels, undid and took off all the wheel nuts but the wheel was still stuck solid. I tried a little persuasion with a rubber mallet but didnt wanna go too crazy in case I knocked it off the jack.

But it would not move an inch and was stuck solid. Has anyone ever come across this before? Or any suggestions how I can sort this? Car is three and half years old and I have had it almost a year. Only done 15k miles so not even sure if the wheels have ever been taken off.

I had it once before when a tyre fitter hadn't used copper grease when refitting the wheel and it had rusted onto the hub. Called the AA (was roadside with a puncture) and the fella just batted it off with a mallett.

Put on hiking boots, back heel it HARD, rotate 180 degress, repeat till it comes off.

Had to do it on my BMW before, not that uncommon tbh.

What kind of jack are you using? Decent trolley jack required for this operation.

Quite common with alloy wheels for the wheel to stick to the hub. A bit of brute force will get it off, put a towel or similar over the wheel to protect it, then hit it a few times top and bottom and side to side with a leather mallet and that should free it.

When you put the wheel back on use some copper slip on the inner surface and that should put a stop to it.

Wot he said ^^^ much more common on BMWs. Personally I use a long handled axe eek but I put a piece of softwood against the inner rim (i.e. under the car) and use the blunt side of the axe head.

Good idea to have someone to catch the wheel wink

Try whacking it a few times with the nuts only finger tight BEFORE you jack it up in the air.

or even with the wheel nuts half a turn from tight - drive it for 100 metres- bingo!

Very common. Experienced it on may cars with alloy wheels. make sure it is securely raised and kick the wheel and then rotate. Alternatively, use a rubber mallet. Use copaslip or similar on the mating surfaces to stop it happening again.

Thanks for all the advice, sounds like it is very common. I must say that is what i suspected that it was the wheel hub that was sticking. Will either get some axle stands on just jack it up til it is just off the ground lossen the wheel nuts slightly then bang it with rubber mallet. That way if it does fall off jack then the nuts should still hold it all in place.

Only got a scissor jack so if above doesn't work then will defo try axle stands, where is best place to put them if the jack it taking up the space on one jacking point?

BTW bang the wheel rim with the rubber mallet, not the tyre. Unless of course you want a broken nose...

Had it on my 968 this weekend. It was the pigot ring or whatever it is called bit in the middle of the wheel had bound onto the hub. It took a lot of whacks with the heel to free it, really gave it a good kicking. Greased it with Optimoly when putting back on so should come off ok in the future.

This is a huge issue with modern day vehicles with alloy wheels and steel hubs. The rust holds the wheel on. Copaslip is the answer when you have got the wheel off. How many poor sods do you see on the hard shoulder with a puncture waiting for the AA or RAC to come along and get the wheel off. A few months back I got a puncture on the lightning. I jacked it up and for the life of me I could not get the wheel off. A mate came round with a big lump of wood and a sledgehammer. He lay under the back of the truck and it took maybe 20 hits to get it too budge. effing ridiculous. All wheels have now been off and thoroughly copaslipped.

Another product of extended service intervals I think, In most normal cases the cars we see don't have the wheels off anymore to inspect brakes, the access to the calipers is sufficient even to carry out a brake fluid change and with average use being less than 10k miles in 2 years and low tyre wear the wheels just grow on!

The UK climate doesn't help, especially with the amount of salt spread lately - we're lucky to have any cars left wink

OT but I run an italian bike all year round, if I don't clean it after every rideout the bloody thing goes furry with corrosion!!

Remove the nuts drive until wheel falls off , high speeds may be required laugh
