Can anyone fill me in... Fuel tank replacement that is required every X number of miles? is my best guess.

(does'nt make any logical sense to me) --- read 'Thicko"

From WIkipedia: "USA F40s have aluminum gas tanks with twin fuel pumps mounted within the tanks (European cars have rubber fuel cells which require replacement each 7 years with externally located fuel pumps )."

I believe this is a big operation involving dismantling of car. I have heard a figure of £15k quoted for the job, but I wouldn't rely on that. Try speaking to DKEngineering if you want to get a true quote for the job.

I believe they are supposed to be replaced every 10 years, dont hold me this. It is because they are race fuel tanks filled with foam. I think the tank is like a bag rather than a metal box.

iirc there was also a problem with the early valves on the tanks which would allow fuel to leak out when under heavy cornering / braking resulting in a rather expensive fire ball.

How would I go about making sure this has not previously happened?!

You could try contacting dealers where the car has been looked after prior to your ownership. Someone in one of the Ferrari owners club`s might have an idea of how to tell?

The fuel cells are made by ATL, the construction date is on the top of the bags/tanks.....and £5.5k + vat without fitting eek

They look like vacuum cleaner bags.

Just had mine done (amongst other things). They do need changing every 10 years and they do cost the amount shown above plus the labour.

This shows how much has to be removed to get to them:

Out of interest and if you don`t mind me asking, what other work did you have done on your F40?

Seems like another scam to get more money out of the poor owner. What happens if you dont replace the tanks?

Expensive too. Hardly a scam to extract more money from the owners.

I will tell all when the work is finished. Needless to say that I have been extremely impressed with the company doing the work and what they have done so far.

Won't be back for 4 to 6 weeks - looking forward to it.

And a stinking one. Leaking fuel lines and tanks do smell somewhat. I thought my garage might explode!

Those posted are ATL tanks not official Ferrari which (of course) cost more + fitting which is a 20 hour job
Mine are being done on Monday. Need replacing every 10 years. I should think if they are not and something happened the insurers could cause problems on any claim! Its been a long winter!!
