Mercedes SLS Supercar Takes To The Ice

Video of the Mercedes SLS supercar testing

There have been numerous spy pictures of the Mercedes 'Gullwing' supercar caught testing over the past few months, but Mercedes has gone a step further by releasing its own official 'spy' footage.

Last month they gave us the pictures, now there are a string of official videos of the new 563bhp coupe, due to go on sale in the UK in 2010.

Watch the video below to see the £150k supercar sliding around on the Swedish ice.

It's great watching but if you're a little impatient and want to get to the good stuff, jump to 1min 20sec where the driver really starts to show off.

A non-descript car going sideways on ice? Great......?

Come, take it's bloody "clothes" off and show it on a tarmac track FFS

Any ideas on how much this thing is going to weigh and what gearbox it will have?

Unfortunately I am predicting "a lot" and "an auto".

They might offer it with their sequential manual box that they fit to the SL63 I suppose.

my problem with this car is the original..

the gullwings were an engineering solution to the fact the racecar design meant it had unfeasibly high sills, and they were the only way of people actually being able to get into the car..

whereas this one, its pure design - adding extra weight at the highest point...

Are those wheels very small or is the car fking huge? Also 560hp seems a little... low these days.

...there are rumuors that Mercedes are playing with the Gullwing design again as it clears space for alternative fuel cells...

As has been said above, a heavy, heavily assisted, auto missile doesn't do it for me

When was the last time merc actually made a light, nimble, great handling manual car?

Or BMW, or Audi (I suppose the R8 isn't too bad, weight-wise, for what it is), or indeed anyone except small volume manufacturers.

I'd be surprised if they get this under 1700kg. frown
