Hi, I'm not mechanically minded so please bear with me.

I have a 1984 350i which developed a metal on metal noise close to home. Luckily I crawled back home. A mechanic friend has just told me the front wheel bearing has collapsed and needs replacing.

According to his source, all front TVR bearings are the same. Is that likely to be correct?

If not, does anyone know the manufacturer and part number I need to get?

Thanks in anticipation.

There should be identifying numbers on the inside of the bearing .. needle roller bearings. They need regular adjustment and greasing .. say every 2 years minimum.

The front uprights, hub and bearings are Granada Mk2, but I think bearings are same as Cortina (as above) - taper roller bearing not needle. Available from normal specialists and many motor factors.

Hi blaine, many thanks mate, that is very much appreciated. I've got a mechanic coming Monday so I should be OK (got to get it done, you may want to borrow it for Chatsworth?).

Hi Rev, thank you for that. I don't know if the lubricating is part of the service or not. I'll check and if learn how to do it if not! Bout time I learnt to do a few more bitssmile

After fitting (tapered roller bearing) torque up to 27lbs, then slacken the nut back by 90deg, which will give the required endfloat. smile

Get the granada set, as it uses a granada axle as front suspension is part granada and part cortina..... Only one bearing is as cortina, the other is bigger as per granada.
Do not overtighten, a bit of play is required. Overtighten and getting everything hot could weld some parts together....

Leigh, used two granada sets and replaced all front wheel bearings as setting up the play was getting dodgy on the original stuff.
Don't know the part numbers, but if you asked for granada spec up to '86 they should be able to come up with the right stuff without any problems (if it is a problem I would find another supplier....).
Prefer SKF myself as a brand, and in 10000km they are fine and no adjustments were required during this time.

But look like I need this type after taking it apart.

Sorry to hear.
If the set you have is for cortina, you can use the larger sized bearing as this one is the same for granada and cortina.
The smaller one won't (the inner diameter is too small) the required one at a shop, they should be able to easily look it up.

Forty quid seems a bit steep; sure I didn't pay that much last time... I got wheel bearings, upper and lower balljoints, all the wishbone and tiebar bushes and track rod ends for £80-odd.

The Links was only to compare the different types.
Be interested to know if any used the one's listed as TVR Bearings

Where did you get all you bits from as I could do with changing the bearing and upper and lower ball joints.
Thanks
Leigh

Try your local factor, I picked up some balljoints off ebay recently and they went straight into the bin, no part numbers on them, holes did not line up etc so I suspected cheap far eastern goods, opted to pay the extra and with wheel bearings it was all under £100.
