Scrappage Scheme Misses 'In Demand' Cars

Small print could block cars with three month waiting lists

Focus RS scrappage eligibility in doubt
New car buyers looking to cash in on the £2k scrappage scheme incentive could be scuppered by small print that excludes cars with a delivery time of more than three months.

Special order cars like the new Ford Focus RS could be excluded from the scrappage scheme as the delivery time exceeds the three-month limit due to its high demand. Other models may also be affected due to the surge in demand for more popular cars that will delay the production of special order vehicles.

At present BMW, Citroen, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Mini, Nissan, Renault, Ssangyong, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo have all signed up to the scheme in which all cars in the range are subject to a £2k discount when trading in a vehicle that is at least ten years old. Half of the money is put up by the manufacturer and the remaining £1k is funded by the government.

Some dealerships are already reporting a huge upturn in business, registering hundreds of interested parties looking to exploit the discounts on offer. Hyundai claims the scrappage scheme proposal has increased interest in its cars by 400 per cent.

Representatives from the Retail Motor Industry Federation will meet with government officials tomorrow to discuss the finer details. The scheme is due to come into effect later this month.

I work in the trade, and got told today that a group in my town have done 40 scrappage deals over the bank holiday weekend.
Nearly all these deals are for 5k worth of new Suzuki or Kia.
Everybody selling 2-3 year old Kias etc. for 2750 is now worried, as people can get a new one for 3k plus their banger.
This scheme really does suck.

Better than that, it's a 400% increase, so that's 5 people in total!

Edit: Blast, beaten to it!

presumably there is some clause to prevent you going and buying a £50 st heap to trade in for £2k off a car?

As if trading in an old banger for a Focus RS will help the environment! The whole idea is completely hat-stand.

The number of cars with a 3 month waiting time are in the main accounting for 0.00001% of new cars sold.

They also tend to be priced £20k +

Now call me stupid but this should not be an issue to anyone driving a £2k 'scrapper'.

The best deals on cars tend to be had at car supermarkets anyway where pre-reg and nearly new are selling with, on average, bigger discounts than £2k being offered for scrapping.

This article on PH is an complete non issue.

Sadly this is, IMO, the whole point of the scheme. Smaller cheap cars for new rather than larger cars where you can knock off more than £2K in any case or buy 6 months old much cheaper. It's a very targetted market.

I fear many second hand traders may well feel even more of a pinch over the coming few months on these sorts of deals.

Yes.

The "scrap" car has to have been registered in your name for a period of 12 months prior to "scrapping".

The scheme expires (as things stand) in eleven and a half months, unless the "pot" runs out first.

Absolute tosh - as people have said already, it's incredibly unlikely that anyone running around in a 10+ year old banger will be buying a Focus RS.

Come on PH journos - you can do better than this...

So, I couldn't buy a turd, leave it on the side of the road for a year and then take advantage of this scheme? This will only run for 11 and a half more months?

I was going to get a Focus RS partly by scrapping my old Volvo 740.

Well as the article eludes, that idea has turned top dust. Just scrapped the Volvo anyway and will see how the RS market is in Jan 2010 which is when I wanted the RS. History says these things will settle down and may be able to get a better deal with no scrappage anyway.

Shouldn't the scrappage scheme be applied only to more economical cars anyway? In Italy you get 2,000 Euros discount on most cars, but 5,000 Euros off a car if it emits less than 100g/km (or something along those lines...) surely trading in a 'dirty old' car for a shiny new economical model is a big part of the point of all this?

Also, I'm still the registered keeper of a 1997 Saxo 1.0 that's been handed down my family. At the last emissions test it was emitting 142g/km of CO2 - lower than most new cars. So, I might test the PH article's theory and try to trade it in for a Focus RS (225 g/km) just to make a mockery of our government's backward policies!

Well, you couldn't keep it on the side of the road without taxing and insuring it, so you'd need space on private land.

But yes the scheme expires in Mar 2010.

The trade in must have a current MOT as well!

Can someone show me the small print about exclusions, I had read that once a manufacturer signed up for the scheme all their models had to be included.
