Porsche Plans RS Spyder Road Car

Rumoured racer-based road car will replace the Carrera GT

The internet rumour-mill is buzzing with news that Porsche is planning a road-going version of its RS Spyder racing car, following a report claiming just that in French magazine L’Automobile.

Although the report is not substantiated by any named sources, L’Automobile says the new RS Spyder road car will be powered by a 400bhp version of the racer’s 3.4-litre V8. In race trim the engine churns out over 500hp at 10,000rpm.

Apparently the new machine will be built around a carbon fibre monocoque, and Porsche’s ‘ultimate’ road car has been conceived to fill the hole left by the Carrera GT – itself a relic of Porsche’s cancelled 1999 Le Mans project.

The RS Spyder, in contrast, won the LMP2 class at Le Mans last year, as well as clinching the 12 Hours of Sebring.

With its super-light weight and relatively short wheelbase – approximately 8ins longer than a 911 – the RS could make a formidable road car. Let’s hope this is one rumour with legs!

Stuffed with the cold so apologies if i've read this wrong.....400BHP car filling the gap left by the CGT.

I seem to remember that having about 550bhp ish?!? Unless this is as light as Any Winehouse on hungerstrike...I think it may not quite fill the gap.

I would say looking at the pic it should be very light compared to the CGT (1430 kg ish wet from dubious internet source). Maybe even half the weight.

3.4 V8...., in a road car, cant see it myself.

Porsche went to serious trouble (read they filed quite a few patents!) to keep the CGT <1400kg.
Even with a CF tub and body its still going to be over the 1000kg, maybe 1200kg I reckon.
A race tuned screamer would be pointless, IMHO.

I reckon much more chance of seeing either the new 4.8 TTV8 (500bhp) or perhaps some kind of bespoke version of the N/A version of that motor, probably with similar output.

Either which way it happens, Porsche wont produce a car that is slower than the last version, so expect VMax of >205mph and sub 3.9 to 100k's. I will open the book at 209mph & 3.7. biggrin

CGT runs 605 bhp and 5.2 lbs/hp. The LMP2 Spyder runs 480 hp for 750 kg, or 3.44 lbs/hp. I wonder what it will take in weight to make the RS2 street legal?

Definately in my lottery car collection especially with some of the optional extras listed! wink

Edited to say: Do they actually make a road going version?
