BMW 5-series GT revealed

4.4-litre V8 for BMW's new 5-series SUV

These are the official pictures of the production ready BMW 5-Series GT, the company’s latest genre-crossing SUV designed to appeal to a 5-series driver looking for a loftier driving position.

Despite its obvious 5-series characteristics the GT is significantly larger than the current 5-series, measuring 4998mm in length, 1901mm in width and is 1559mm tall. That makes the GT 158mm longer, 61mm wider and 94mm higher than the 5-series. It also uses an enlarged wheelbase, with an extra 180mm added.

A choice of three engines will be available at launch, the highlight of which will be found in the 550i GT which gets a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 producing 407bhp and 442lb ft of torque. That will see the range-topping GT crack 62mph in 5.5sec whilst burning 25.2mpg.

A smaller 3.0-litre twin-turbo developing 306bhp and 295lb ft will be fitted to the 535i GT, while the economical option comes in the form of a 3.0-litre diesel with 245bhp and 398lb ft. All models are fitted with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.

A four-wheel-drive version is also in the pipeline, however, customers will have to wait until at least 2011 to order one.

Errr.. The X6 and the 5 series have copulated.

It's official. BMW are the manufacturer of Germanys most repulsive cars.

I don't like the BMW style genre and this does nothing to change my mind. It does look better than the show concept, a bit Citroen XM at the back but basically another big hatch with a stupidly small rear window.

what's the point? It is slightly larger than a five so you might as well go for a seven and if you wanted an SUV there is already the x5 and x6. A bit like trying to occupy the same street with as many Boot's chemists as possible so that there is no competition!

The side profile and the front are passable, but the back.... its like an 28 stone lap dancer bending over... just something you dont want to see. Ever.

What a God-ugly vehicle.

I think BMW have/had it spot on with the current M5 and the current M3 coupe. So it proves they can get it right. What on earth is going on with the X5, X6, new ugly faced looking range.

I think for the first ever time, I am glad that the 'larger' images are no bigger than the thumbnails.

Who the hell has been running BMW for the past decade?!?! They have completely lost the plot and their cars are getting worse every year. The only BMW true to the history of the company is the 135i coupe, everything else is just st!!!
I used to love nothing more than a BMW and now the 135i is the only thing i'll even look at!!!

Ugly, and once again another variation of cars they already produce that fufil the purpose better.
Surely econimcally it can't be beneficial to be producing 1001 different models?

I like it. It's not repulsive, should be roomy, and I should be able to see over the top of it in traffic!

bks. I wish people would stop saying that. It HAS a point. It's just a fricken ugly machine.

I am stunned that ANYONE looked at that and thought, "Yeah, thats good looking - lets use THAT design above all others"

Pointless - shouldn't BMW be making cars that use less fuel not more?
