BMW 5-series GT revealed
4.4-litre V8 for BMW's new 5-series SUV
These are the official pictures of the production ready BMW 5-Series GT, the company’s latest genre-crossing SUV designed to appeal to a 5-series driver looking for a loftier driving position.
Despite its obvious 5-series characteristics the GT is significantly larger than the current 5-series, measuring 4998mm in length, 1901mm in width and is 1559mm tall. That makes the GT 158mm longer, 61mm wider and 94mm higher than the 5-series. It also uses an enlarged wheelbase, with an extra 180mm added.
A choice of three engines will be available at launch, the highlight of which will be found in the 550i GT which gets a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 producing 407bhp and 442lb ft of torque. That will see the range-topping GT crack 62mph in 5.5sec whilst burning 25.2mpg.
A smaller 3.0-litre twin-turbo developing 306bhp and 295lb ft will be fitted to the 535i GT, while the economical option comes in the form of a 3.0-litre diesel with 245bhp and 398lb ft. All models are fitted with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.
A four-wheel-drive version is also in the pipeline, however, customers will have to wait until at least 2011 to order one.
I think BMW have/had it spot on with the current M5 and the current M3 coupe. So it proves they can get it right. What on earth is going on with the X5, X6, new ugly faced looking range.
