Hi all,

I have a high pitched squeal/screech that happens at 1900 rpm in all gears under load. No noise after and before in the rev range - just around 1900

It does happen when free revving but is much less noticeable.

I have been advised it may well be the Gearbox Input Thrust Bearing - does this sound likely?

I was a little sceptical seeing as it does it to a lesser extend when free revving but seeing as I'm no gearbox expert, I wanted to check first before I pull the box off and start changing bearings willy nilly.

Also, if I wanted to get it done professionally, how much labour is one looking at to change said bearing/s?

Cheers

Ryan

I have a strange grinding when slipping the clutch. This has been diagnosed as either the thrust or spigot bearing. Labour wise its apparently about a days work, but while its out you may aswell get the clutch done for peace of mind. Clutch changes (which will include changing the thrust bearing anyways) cost somewhere between £600 - £800, but i will be doing mine myself.

When i changed my engine a few years back i had to take both the engine and box out together because the sodding thing would not come away from the engine in situ.

I am now in love with the new exhaust! Pops and bangs galore evil

hmm, had the Clutch done 8k ago - so they would have changed the thrust bearing then? Looks like it's not the thrust then unless:

1 - The bearing is failing already

2 - They didn't change the bearing.

It wasn't actually aimed at you, but a.n.other ( and I will continue to remind him forever & a day... hehe ) Did you do the same thing by any chance whistlewhistle

PS you need a pack of shims to set the float when installing the bearing, and probably worth replacing the seal whilst you're at it. There are factory manuals for T5s on the net that detail the procedures wink
