Toyota Supra Replacement Due In 2011

400bhp rear-drive coupe could get V6 petrol AND hybrid power

Reports from Japan say Toyota’s wild-looking FT-HS hybrid ‘Supra’ is still under development - and a production model concept could be revealed at the Tokyo motor show this autumn.

New Supra - on the road by 2011?
New Supra - on the road by 2011?
According to the as-yet-unconfirmed rumours, two versions of the FT-HS are in the works. First up will be the hybrid version packing the Lexus 450h’s 3.5-litre V6 coupled to a hybrid powertrain from the Toyota Crown – a combination that will deliver a maximum output of 400bhp to the FT-HS’s rear wheels.

However, it also seems Toyota is intent on satisfying the sports car purists with the new model, and will offer a basic version without any of the hybrid electrics that could go on sale for between £20-£30k.

The reports say that although Toyota’s new FT-HS ‘Supra’ has been held back by the Toyobaru coupe, which is destined for launch in 2010, the project has now moved out of the design phase, with test mules slated to be running by late this year and production versions hitting showrooms as early as 2011.

I agree, that looks absolutely ghastly. Hope they don't bring out a pig and ruin the supra name...

Thirded. WAY over-styled, and looks hopelessly impractical to either make or own...

I do like the idea of the 'basic, lightweight' version though...

It doesn't look like they've spent an awful long time on the design. I expect it to change dramatically when more refined prototypes are made public closer to launch.

I never liked the last generation Supra, either in terms of looks or the way it drove, although you can't argue with its straight line performance. This is horribly over-styled though. If it ever reaches production, I doubt it'll look anything like that.

I think this is the first time that I've seen people wanting the actual car to look different to the concept!

I dont like it, the old supra is a classic design and a legendary car. I think this will detract from the originals status. Although i highly doubt it will look anything like this concept. HOPEFULLY!

How odd... People slate the GTR for it's 'normal' looks, and Toyota release these, and people say it;s too over designed. People are fickle indeed!

Different people I expect - you generally only pipe up if you don't like it.

Which I don't :P

I like it. But can it get rid of its medallion man image?

I think it looks interesting and quite dramatic, I like the idea of the shark nose type front end.

It's good to see Toyota planning to build some sports coupe models again.

they need to get a new 'supra' out but this is a long way from a finished design. going in the right direction tho... and as for ruining the supra name.... you remember the model before the last one don't you???

Looks like car manufacturers have realised that car lovers will buy sports cars as soon as they can afford one no matter what the public sentiments about cars are!

Personally I think it looks awesome. However the chances of any of the styling making production will be a big fat '0', and it'll look like all the other bland ricers.

Well all i can say is its far too early to pass any judgement as yet but i do wonder why they have gone for a V6 and not V8 and often wonder why no previous Supra was never offered with a V8 option
