OK,

One of my sons has an 02 Punto 1.2, which has covered around 50,000 miles and is in pretty good overall nick, passing it's MOT around three months ago, however the last few weeks it has been leaking oil, and on inspection it seems like the sump has rusted through at the front, so requires a new one.....You can almost poke your finger through it.......

I will contact my local (indy) garage tomorrow, but in the meantime any guesses on possible costs involved, a small metal sump can't be THAT expensive to replace....can it?...smile

Thanks in anticipation.

Just remember to drain all of the oil before removing the old one. The gaskets tend to stick them in place quite well, so once the bolts are out they need a bit of persuasion to remove them.

It is, however, funny watching someone do this when they haven't removed the oil.

Probably worth doing an oil and filter change at the same time. Phone FIAT up and get the price of the part, then add about an hours labour.

ETA,

I'm not familiar with the Punto layout, occasionally engine mounts need undoing in order to remove a sump, which makes the job a right pain.

I got it welded in the end, and then used Devcon liquid metal to cover it over. Has worked a treat, and only cost £10 thumbup

Hi wacky i used to have a 2001 punto and went over a speed bump bit to fast and heard a big bang pulled over to see lots of oil gushing out, garage told me engine was knackered, £2,000 down the drain, but being a girly perhaps i was ripped off, but id never have a punto again.

oh and if you need an odd jobber in any of your properties then i'm the girl for you hopefully.
again. Sarah

Expensive and a pain in the arse apparently! Puntos are known for this particular problem! Happened to my g/fs a few years back. Iirc the exhaust manifold goes under the sump so needs to be removed. The sump was about £150 from an indy garage. She ended up trading it in for a celica instead of getting it fixed!

You should be able to get a sump for approx £30 from either ebay or buypartsby.co.uk or shop4parts.com or fiatforum.com

Labour should be an hour max, plus new oil / filter plus gasket and sealant.

Sumps arent hard to replace on the Punto, sa said, the downpipe needs to be removed, but thats a nice easy job (6 bolts is all) and then you have the approx 15 bolts that hold the sump on, so not too bad at all.

I just had this done, £280 in total it cost at our local independent garage. They aint the cheapest, but they are fairly good and they are two doors up from where the lady works. I skelped it while up in Scotland, but it fortunately didn't drain itself until we'd got back to the cottage. Cue start up next morning to a to a cacophony of tappet noise and a swift turning off. Lix Toll garage in Killin managed to patch it to get us home, but looking at the sump it was a blooming miracle they'd found enough to weld. This is a really common problem from what I've been told. Mind you driving down a dirt track to Lochan Na Lairige wasn't the smartest idea I'd had, especially as the loch had been half drained...

When I worked at a Fiat dealer back in the days we used to sell loads of these on old mk1 Puntos because of rusting out. It seems they didn't learn with the second generation Punto...

I once had the sump off my old Punto to seal up a leak (which probably was all that stopped the sump pan rotting away...). The job was a piece of cake, just stick it on ramps and whip the downpipe off (in fact I've a feeling that if you just unbolt it from the manifold it'll bend down enough on the flexi section to clear the sump - if memory serves me correctly).

Sump pan should cost the square root of bugger-all from a scrapper's or ebay - I'd guess about 20 sheets for a non-rotten one.

On my car there was no sump gasket, so I used a silicon sealant to form the seal. (DON'T use ordinary red Hermatite - I tried this and it p*ssed oil everywhere so I had to re-do it with the proper stuff paperbag never leaked again though!) smile

Update:-

Had the work done at Richard Cort's Fiat near Bury last week, new Sump, oil and filter change, cost around £250, they did the work very efficently within 3/4 hours....(actual cost of the sump was around £120)

I was told they tend to go at the front of the sump because of road stone chips..........

As my son's car s in otherwise excellent condition, I didn't want to go down the scrapyard route....

That's some hourly rate. Makes me realise why I bother getting my hands dirty doing jobs myself.

Hiya Richard.....You OK?....biggrin

I think they charged around £40ph, which isn't too bad these days....I could have done it myself but tbh I couldn't be arsed....My days of being a grease monkey ended years ago when I built my Westfield from scratch......smile

When it started happening to mine after 85K, I was quoted £130. That was over a year ago now, though. Apparently they have to remove the downpipe in order to replace it.

Right, thought you meant 3/4 an hour rather than 3-4 hours.

Going alright thanks, got my pass out at work on Monday then get to go driving trains on my own!
