Anathema to some on here I'm sure but I like my diesels and this installation of a 4LK (3.8L and 4 cylinder) Gardner looks quite neat!

Not sure it would be as smooth as the petrol engine though.......

This was put in to replicate a Rolls that was originally spec'd with this type of engine.

There were quite a few of those done, especially during the war. I have a period road test somewhere of an 8 litre Vintage Bentley with a Gardner diesel.

perhaps in these economically challenged times, your barge would benefit from the addition of big diesel?

A Detroit Diesel powered Bentley..... that would be something.....

In 1932 a Gardner 4LW was fitted in to the frame of a 1925 Bentley to produce the first all-British diesel-engined car,it was not only economical, but lively and travelled Brooklands race track at 76 MPH.

Further trials by Gardners involved fitting a 4LK in to a Lagonda and a 6LK in to a Invicta sports car which was capable of 98 mph and 35 mpg.

Altogether about sixty LK engines have been installed in different makes of cars ,including Daimlers, Jaguars and Wolseleys.

Unfortunately a travesty which was some of their own making, Hugh Gardner famously stated " As long as I am alive there will not be a Turbocharged Gardner engine", So Cummins had a field day and took the market from them.

What goes around comes around,Cummins are ceasing to produce engines for the vehicle market.

Shame, there was some serious noise out of the Gardner 6HLX-engined Leyland Bristol RE buses that were so famous around Belfast. Big straight-6 pummelling your legs with it's black reek as it passed you while you waited to cross the street. biggrin
