After having done a service on my BIL's T5, is there any way to reset the service light myself?

Reset Volvo 850 XC70 S70 V70 C70 S80 Service Light
S70 and V70 and C70 and XC70

1. Press and hold odometer reset button.
2. Turn ignition switch to Run.
3. After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button.
4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again.

Is it a P1 (850-style) or a P2 (S60/V70/S80 style)?

(Not sure about the newest generation V70, but I guess those are almost all still within warranty/franchised network when it comes to servicing.)

Anyway, this was a bit of a pain on my S60 after I had a service done by a garage who didn't have the diagnostics, the procedure can be a little finicky and I had to try two or three times before it worked.

Here's the detail for the later P2 cars, nicked from elsewhere:

Procedure said:
Resetting the Service reminder indicator (SRI), model years -2001
The service reminder indicator (SRI) informs the driver that it is time for the car to be serviced. The lamp remains lit for 120 seconds when the ignition is switched on.
Note! If the lamp flashes, it may be because one of the service parameters has not been programmed.
Proceed as follows to reset the service reminder indicator (SRI):
-Ignition position I
-Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
-Ignition position II
-The service reminder indicator (SRI) starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
-Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
Note! If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset. However the indicator will stop flashing.

Resetting the service reminder indicator (SRI), model years 2002-
The service reminder indicator (SRI) informs the driver that it is time for the car to be serviced. The text message is displayed for 120 s each time the ignition is switched on.
Proceed as follows to reset the service reminder indicator (SRI):
-Ignition position I
-Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
-Ignition position II.
Note! Turn the key to position II within 2 seconds.
-Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original value has been reset.
Note! For all vehicles from the 2003 model year a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.
-Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded
-If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
Note! If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.

I've tried both those but the light's still on for 2 mins after starting the engine.

It's a 01/1998 model if that helps.

Odd. My 1999 resets fine with the key procedure. It is a bit fussy about timing so usually takes a couple of goes.

Alternatively it stops on its own after a couple of hundred miles.

I've got a bit of an issue with my car at the moment. It's V70 on a 57 plate, but it's the "old" shape. The alarm when it off the other day and now keeps flashing up "alarm service required". Is there anyway to get rid of it, without going to Volvo for a reset?

The newer models, 2008 on. Push the odometer reset, insert the fob in its slot and wait several seconds for a bleep. Job done.

Fix the fault? the alarm probably went off due to a fault with it, the car has detected the fault and is telling you about it so it can be fixed!
