Has anyone seen a Triumph 3000? It was one of three prototypes based on the 2500 with the Stag V8 fitted. The three were a blue Estate (destroyed) and two Saloons, one white auto and a brown one with a proper gear box. The car didn't happen because Rover threw their toys out of the pram because the P6 would have been crap in comparison (not that it could stand up to the 2.5pi anyway). Trumph got their own back with the TR7 and later TR8 instead of the Rover Coupe (MG B replacement) that was on the cards.

I think the car would have been brilliant and if it went into production Stag bits would be a lot cheaper. The 2000/2500/2.5pi chassis could easily take the extra ponies and torque. May be a worth project in the future.

There was also a Triumph 2500shape V8 Stag powered Four Wheel Drive Estate kicking around a few year's ago at some of the Triumph Show's.

Del Lines carried out some conversions to create Stag saloons/estates. They were very rare and even rarer now. However there is a Del Lines saloon recently restored belonging to a well known Triumph 2000 Register member. Awesome car by all accounts!!

The Stag engined 4x4 estate has recently changed ownership and is now undergoing complete and seemingly very speedy restoration by another club member!! Look on members blogs on Club Triumph forum to view progress.

It seems like every 2000 owner is in the progress of fitting a Stag V8 - including me smile

The British Leyland throw back 3500 (Buick V8 boat anchor powered one) looked interesting as well, don't those go up to 5000 in Chelsea tractors?

There are a number of Stag engined V8 saloons and estates. Personally I have seen the one Estate ( now resprayed black over the Tahiti blue it was) and a yellow saloon with a black vinyl roof. The latter was owned by Andy Roberts of the 2000/2.5 register, as was the estate at one time. I last saw the estate at the STAB event in 2006. I hope this helps Rob

That was a Triumph 3500 (Pi with Rover V8) which was used for towing lots of PIs to mendip raceway during the 1980s.
It was a match made in heaven especially when the auto was removed and a 5 speed sdi box installed.
It finally rotted away and far as I know was scrapped.
Unless it was saved ?

That is the coolest thing ever. So...... Dear Santa I've been (fairly) good this year can I have a crate GM/Rover 302ci/4996cc V8 (TVR or Range Rover) and a Triumph 2000/2500 to put it in. Oh and a proper gear box. Automatics are for women, men who don't like women and the old. Thank you Rob aged 30 and 3/4. smile

Dear Santa, Can you ask Robert060379 why he would ever want a Buick cast-off V8?

If your doing it the easy way - sit a Stag V8 (as the engine bay was designed to take it).

If your doing it the hard way - Ford 302/Chevy LS1 (not much harder to fix than RV8 but a more power, more reliable and cheaper too).

Money being no object a crate engine would be on my list but with the reccession I thought I'd give Santa a break and only ask for bits you can get from a breakers yard in the UK. 302 cI Small Block Ford engine's are a lot of work if you want more than 200bhp out of them and a LS series Chevy lump will cost twice a decent Stag with Tax and M.O.T. There's an Essex (Scimitar) powered Dolly on Ebay at the moment that looks like it could be fun. smile

How about a Audi S4 2.7 bi-turbo. Classic looking engine with 245bhp as standard and there is a 450bhp one down here at present. And they're getting cheaper.
Thats the power we always wanted during the 1980s when we were playing with the big triumphs.
Or a Audi S2 engine, straight 5 20v turbo? Would look great in a PI, but 230+ bhp?
The 5 cyl engine was a 1970s/80s development and looks like it.

And you can lob the end of the trans-axle to make a bell hosing adaptor for a proper gear box. I know a chap who did it to a Westfield S-Eight when Rover lump started making funny noises. smile

RS2 engine in a Mk1 2000, Hmm. Wouldn't look out of place and a 315 bhp Triumph 2000. Its' got a ring to it (and a snapped diff I suspect).

This could get expensive, but just imagine the result!
In fact thinking about it an Audi RS2/S2/80 quattro set up isn't far off a 2000 (struts etc), now how about a 350bhp 4wd 2000 (in fact a 2200) but looks standard?
Anyone got a S2 they're breaking and a solid (wouldn't want to hurt a good standard one) 2000/2500 with knackered mechanicals?
What a daft idea, its' got to be done.
Cheers

I think you'd have an interesting time at the front end, the 3b or ABY (or AAN) engine overhangs the front axle by quite a way. I'd have thought an M3 engine more in keeping with the spirit of Triumph.

Thats a good one! staight six and all. The BMW stable offers a wide range of power plants (4.0 V8?) and axles etc to match.
Whats the most power squeezed out of a Triumph six? We had about 180 in this.
That went well (like roto joints though).

Slightly off topic I had a wankel in my Spitfire when I sold the old girl. Actually a Mazda 13b RX7 turbo engine. The owner got bored of that and replaced it with a 3.0 Eco-tec from a Vauxhall Omega, five speed box and diff. On 15 Ich wheels the Spitfire is now good for 150mph!

Back on topic I know where there's a ratty Mk2000 but the owner won't sell it. frown
