CBT & Licence for 16yr old...

My Son is 16 in a couple of weeks and I have already got a 50cc bike for him to ride but he obviously needs to get whatever kind of licence/training required to ride it.

As someone who passed his bike test over 30 years ago (and in a different country) I don't know the procedure of 'CBT' etc.

Can anyone point me the way of an 'idiots guide' on what to do?

Basically he needs a provisional licence and to take a one day CBT course/test. He can then ride his 50cc with L plates pretty much everywhere except motorways but cannot carry pillion passengers.
CBT lasts for 3 years then needs to be either re taken or full test taken.

Just need provisional, insurance and CBT certificate and the vehicle to be restricted to 30mph, which they usually are as standard anyway.

Well I'm sure he'll do a test ASAP for bike and car so 2 yrs should be plenty.

Just done the licence application on-line, £50 for a provisional licence

Sorry, it might be. Thought it was 3 but they keep changing it.

i seem to remember when i was 16 & CBTs were just invented, the geared CBT was 2 years but the moped gay version was 3 years
they had the auto year ban if you hadnt passed test & rode till the end of the CBT back then too, glad thats gone for the newbies these days.

It's a shocker, isn't it? They want a bit more money off you for everything - wait until you pay for the theory and practical tests... Makes the CBT itself look a bit of a bargain!

I thought that to ride a bike at 16, it had to be a moped, which (I thought) they'd stopped making. (In my day, you could just about find a Yamaha FS1-E)

I though that scooters (even if under 50cc) weren't permissable until 17. (I'm sure that was the rule in the 90's, or am I wrong/has the law changed)

noop, its a 50cc at 16 and up to a 125 at 17(that is, if its 15bhp or under. as some of them are 33bhp)

there are a few 50cc geared bikes about, RS50, one's rescued from a skip (cant remember the name of it) just look around

afaik, technically at 16 you're permitted to ride anything below 50cc capacity not capable of more than 31mph
The speed limitation is generally very little enforced but obviously in the case of things like RS50's, the Motorhispania RX50, even DT50s(my mate's pulled an indicated 70 downhill) if you're caught dicking about then they're in a bit of trouble. My little 50 twist&go did 40 odd and it was still restricted. There's a fair bit of leeway with it but if you're on something quick you've gotta be prepared for the ever-intrusive BiB to poke their noses in.

I got a Gilera RCR50, which is the same bike as a Derbi Senda and AFAIK uses the same 6-speed engine as the RS50/GPR50 etc, he wanted a geared bike to learn how to ride 'properly', it looks more than 50cc, the seat is higher than on my bike.

I must say as doing the cbt it is a complete and utter joke. How the hell they expect for you to be able to ride properly after doing it amazes me. I am 17 now and have only done my cbt but the fact you cannot fail it is a joke and in my opinion is not safe no wonder so many people crash within a few a weeks of passing. I crashed my scooter about 2 weeks after an every one I know who took the test crashed not long after I am okay now as have a years experience under my belt and can ride properly but after the test to be honest I could not ride properly at all. Will take my proper test soon but personally I think the cbt itself needs to be looked at and also the 30mph barrier they have introduced on the 50cc scooters I think that this should be increased to about 40/45 and the test itself should be made harder as in my opinion it would make it a lot safer for everyone. I remember when my old 50 used to be restricted to 30mph it was just dangerous lorries were doing silly manoeuvres to get past and I found myself having to slow down a lot to avoid them hitting me as they realised they did not have enough room to get past. Now I am okay as 17 and have a bike that will go about 70 which is far safer as at least I can now keep up with traffic and now know how to ride properly as the current system in place is a joke. Forcing someone who has hardly any experience to ride something that basically causes everyone to overtake is just not safe in my opinion as you do not learn enough on the cbt and it only takes someone to panic when being overtaken for something nasty to go wrong. Oh and yeah decent choice of bike but the geared 50's are just a pain i tried a rs50 was just not relaxing as have to change gear constantly to get anywhere as such little power to be honest I had a piaggio nrg scooter de-regged with an exhaust and that beat my mates rs50 all the time. In my opinion geared bikes are a bit pointless until you can have a 125 as at least they are slightly less frantic to drive and don’t have to change gear as much to make sure you have any power at all.

I never tipped my scooter over once and it pulled a steady 40mph on the flats, restricted. If you ride like a fool you're gonna drop it.
