Got my hemet and gloves nicked this afternoon from my top box. The bike was parked in a busy street outside Harrods and the lock was forced open in broad daylight in a busy street... Granted the lock on the old skool Rickman top box probably wasn't the most robust out there, but I'm still slightly surprised that someone had the audacity and motivation to break in, in broad day light to steal a second hand helmet and a pair of winter mountain bike gloves... Cheeky dicks. Luckily though, Harrods CCTV covers either end of this street so they will have been picked up almost guaranteed. The incident was reported to Chelsea police about an hour ago. With everything in mind though, I'm not sure whether the police will bother to do anything about it. Anyone had any similar experiences? Also, if anyone has or was thinking of getting one of those Rickman top boxes, don't bother because they're utter s te. The model in question can be seen via this link: http://www.gazbikes.co.uk/shop/rickman-polybox-mot...

That's harsh, I park up daily just round corner and not been done, although I use a Givi Maxia. Hope the scrotes get caught.

I always worry about someone doing this when I lock my stuff away in panniers / top box. Hasn't happened yet.....
Mind you, I'm surprised you can still get those old Rickman boxes - the last one I had was bought 2nd hand in the early 90s - I thought they stopped making them decades ago.

This incident has got me thinking though. I'm going to buy a new Givi top box and once I get it I'm going to drill a couple of holes in its base and loop a small chain through it from the outside. Once the helmet is in the box, I'll chain it to the box and rack... Seems drastic but I'm sure it'd work. Also, I forgot to mention that I managed to get home by going into Harrods and buying a cheap polystyrene skateboard helmet to wear for the 12 mile trip home. Not sure it was legal and it definitely wasn't safe but there's no f king way I was leaving the bike there all night...

That sucks - I'd do a proper job (again) on anyone I caught steeling from anyones bike/car. Don't hold your breath over the Harrods CCTV, my OH had her handbag snatched from inside a Woolies superstore a number of years ago & she was carrying our baby son @ the time. Woolworths would not look at their CCTV because nothing from the store had been taken. Funny thing was, they later tried to use CCTV against me after I had punched the store manager on his arse the very next day. As you can imagine, it was a bittersweet experience when WW's went bust.

I hate to break it to you but it was relaunched at least six months ago, just online this time !

What 'bright' spark did that?.....I bet you took a 'dim' view of what had happened & the police were probably unable to 'shine any light' on the incident. ......errrrrm sorry, compulsive behaviour

I had the CDI unit stolen from a Diversion 600 whilst it was parked outside my flat overnight back in the mid 90s....
Bizarre theft, that one.
